The rest of the day is spent training. We have to be in shape for the Maze, of course. The guards follow us everywhere we go, giving us no opportunities to escape, or even have a decent conversation without their noses at the back of our heads.
Kenzie barely talked to me all day. We made eye contact a few times, but she would look away as soon as it happened. As if I didn't know she likes me or something. It's childish.
I lie on my bed, wondering how we're going to make it out of this. At least Kenzie is promised her life. But I'm not. What if I die? What if she never remembers we were lovers, and ends up liking someone else? My heart beats faster at the thought of losing her. The only thing I can do is silently cry to myself. The night lasts so long.
I got a maximum of two on-and-off hours of sleep. I guess that's all I expected, though.
I drag my feet as I head to breakfast exceptionally late. I could barely bring up the energy to get myself out of bed.
Everyone stares at me as I sit down at the table. "You look disgusting," Minho says bluntly.
"I just skipped a few hours of sleep," I reply, rubbing my face.
"You mean a few hundred years," he replies without hesitation.
"What did you dream about last night?" Kenzie asks.
"What? No, I don't have the nightmares."
"Dude, you look like a shuck crank that got his face, run over three times, then ate the driver."
"Thanks, Minho, I think I got this," Kenzie shakes her head, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm just tired!" I yell, all too loudly. Most of the cafeteria becomes silent.
"His head twitched," Minho points at me.
"Just a little, he's fine," Kenzie tries to reassure me. I stand up to leave, but she pulls me back down, "You already have those soldiers' attention with your slintheaded shouting, keep it down, would ya?" She looks more serious then I've ever seen her. She must know something. She looks at the guards, then back at me, "They're not gonna send Cranks into the Maze..."
I feel my face sag, like an actual frown, rather then a resting face.
"Who told you that?"
She looks as if she's told some "top secret" information. She breaths in deeply, "Ava Paige."
"Why didn't you tell me before?" I ask in a hushed whisper.
"I didn't think you could handle it."
"Handle it? You think you're in charge of what I can and can't handle?"
"Newt, she knows," she says after a long pause, "She has our brains on a screen constantly. She showed me the signs of the Flare in your brain."
My heart skips a beat.
"Wh-"
"She says if you don't recover soon, and I mean like right now, then you'll be held back from the Maze...and maybe even killed." She stares into my eyes before continuing, "See. You're scared. All these emotions are charging it inside you." She turns back to face forwards, as if she's mad at me. I do the same, trying not to think of what's going to happen to me.
"Do you love me?" I ask quietly without meaning to.
"I don't even know who I am." She stands up, and storms off.
