All of my inspirational reassurance wears off by the morning. The butterflies in my stomach grow more enormous with every waking moment. I want to get this whole day over with, and be unconscious so the new me can take over my life. Tetnically, I'm going to die. Everything I am is channeled from my memories. The things I've been through. The friends I've made. The people I've loved.
The boy I've loved.
Those things are what made me...well, me. I'm going to die today, again. By the time I realize how deep I am into my thoughts, I'm already dressed and ready for my last few hours. I race out the door in a speed walk, hoping not to run into anyone on my way to the lab.
"Let's get this over with," I call to Chancellor Paige.
"Oh no, not yet. Come back after lunch."
"Are you serious? Why? So I can spend half of my day overtaken with anxiety? I don't think so. We're doing this now."
"If I could shut you up by erasing your memory I would. But we're not ready yet. But we will be by the end of lunch. Get out," she snaps back.
I take a deep breath, trying to think of something witty to say, but nothing comes to me.
I walk down the stairs with my arms crossed. Aris enters, staring up at me as I make my way down towards him.
"You're the last person I would expect to see heading to breakfast," he states with his head tilted, "Most everyone is staying in their rooms."
"A bunch of party poopers if ya ask me," I try to lighten the mood. It obviously works, because his body seems to lose tension after I say it. He begins to walk next to me, but moves a little faster so he can look back and talk to me.
"What do you think Minho is gonna pull?"
"Nothing. They'll probably knock him out before taking him to the lab," I answer, shaking my head.
"That's probably the best idea. I feel bad for all of the people who have had to lie under Minho as he beats the klunk outta them."
"He's a tough one."
"I'll say," he opens the door for me, and follows close behind. "Speaking of the devil..."
Minho sits at our table, violently eating a pancake without a fork.
"Why'd they let you out?" I ask as I set my plate out.
He lifts his hands up, revealing cuffs locked tightly to his wrists. "They let me come early. A guys' gotta eat."
"You gonna cause any trouble?" Aris asks with a smirk.
"You betcha." He stands up, and places his hands on his head. The anger he feels is obvious, I can see it through his locked jaw, and squinched butt cheeks.
"He's mad," Aris whispers.
"I can see that."
"Did you see his butt? It was all squeezed up like-"
"Yes, Aris, I saw," I laugh. "Who else is in the cells?"
"Gally and Minho are the only ones I know of," he takes a bite of his food, and stares off at the wall. I can tell he's thinking about what's going to happen to us later. It's hard to have a normal convocation when you're aware of your unsettling future. Why is this happening to us? Are we that bad of people? Do we deserve this?"
"Come on, don't think like that," I try to say something calming, "We're good people. Heros, in fact. We're gonna find a cure, and save everyone. Don't you want that?"
Before he can respond, Lily and Thomas take a seat. The last time me and Thomas talked, I was acting like a selfish idiot. "Hey guys," Lily says in a monotone voice.
"Goodmorning." I respond.
"Not really," Thomas glares, "When are they taking us?"
"After lunch..." I stab at my food.
"Why? Haven't we suffered through enough waiting? Take us now."
"Ava said they weren't ready," I refuse to make eye contact with him.
The rest of our meal is eaten in silence. No one else comes to join us, which was expected.
