"You are excused to your rooms. The doors will be locked in twenty minutes. Don't let us find you outside of them." She steps off the stage, followed by Joshua and Barbara.
Everyone stands to their feet except me and the other three girls. We wait for the groups to shrink so we don't get pushed down on our way out.
I thought I would have a chance to talk to Newt, but he must have left with the others. What does he think of all of this?
I clutch the hem of my shirt once we stand to our feet. The room is silent and hollow now that everyone is gone.
Not a word is spoken by any of us as we head to our rooms. It takes too long, but I finally reach my door.
The night is long. I only get about three hours of sleep.
I wake up the next morning with a huge head ache. It's eight o'clock, but the doors haven't unlocked yet.
This is insane. They don't own us.
After fixing my hair and face, because that's the only thing I could do, I take a seat on the couch, rolling my ring on my hand. I try to read the words on the inside, but I'm shaking like crazy.
I'm startled by the unlocking sound of my door. I hesitate to exit my room, but end up doing it anyway.
I take a look down the hallway in both directions. Everyone is standing in their doorways...staring at me. My eye catches Newt, causing him to look away. "They must have unlocked the door for a reason," my voice echoes.
"What do we do?" I hear someone say.
"Eat?" I casually walk down the hall with my hands to my side. Everyone watches my movements closely, obviously wondering if I was serious.
I take the stairs. I don't feel like being in a tight space, being forced to answer questions. Thing is, I don't have any answers. What happened to Thomas being the center of attention? Why don't they just tall to him?
Then again...he was the one blindly running around, taking turns unaware of where they led. But why would WICKED leave signs everywhere saying that he was the true leader?
"Kenzie!" I hear a voice call after me. Footsteps charge down the stairs. I look back to see Lily catch up to me. "What are you doing?"
"Getting something to eat."
"You really trust them?"
"Well, they're not going to kill us off before the experiment are they?"
"I guess not...why did they wait so long to open up the doors?"
"How should I know? Why do you guys think I know all the answers? To be honest, I'm more clueless than any of you! I'm scared and tired, too!"
"Okay, okay. I was just...trying to talk to you."
"Why? What's the point in talking about something horrible!"
"Just calm down, Kenzie. No one meant to make you mad..."
I take a deep breath. "I always...forget it. I'm sorry, alright?" I say sincerely.
"No, what is it?"
"I don't know," we stop walking down the stairs, "I've just always been the comforter. No one is the one to tell me everything is going to be okay. I-"
"I know you think that no one cares, but look at it this way, we all look up to you. You're our hero. You always know what to do, and what to say. We can count on you to be there; we need you."
"I guess so."
We begin to walk again, and I can feel her thoughts. She trying to make things okay, but they're just not.I'm not.
