"What were you really thinking?" Newt asks as we head up the elevator alone. We left lunch early to see what the news on the faster cure is.
"I already told you."
"No. That's not it. You get this look on your face. Besides, I've known you too long to know when your lying." He smirks at me as if he's won, but the elevator reaches a stop, and I give him a sarcastic smile back. But I know that's not the end of the conversation.
Ava looks put out when we enter the room. I don't care, though. "Good afternoon. I suppose you're here for an update?"
"Yes, please," Newt says as he leans up against a lab table.
"As I said. We have moved to phase two. There will be no answers received until it has begun."
"So, what is it?" I ask.
She turns to me, "Just because you are bold enough to ask,  does not mean that I will give you answers."
"We deserve to know," I snap back.
"You would be dead if it wasn't for WICKED's secrets."
I clench my jaw in anger. "Actually," I step closer to her, "I would be dead because of WICKED... and you would be dead because your cure didn't work. I'm the reason you're alive. I'm the reason all of you are alive. And I'm still distributing my time, and my life for this shuck cure that I already have! If you want to play this by who did what, I suggest you throw some bigger accomplishments at me."
She stands, staring at me. Appalled by my words. "I presume you you think you're still going to get those answers." She smiles at me.
"I don't want them. Do whatever you want to me." I can't believe I just said that. "Because I'm the one who's going to save the world. Not you." I can't believe I said that too...
"So, you're giving me permission to use you, again?"
I feel Newt grab my arm. This escalated quickly. "No. No, I came here for answers. Not to sign up for another torment."
"But you want to save everyone? There is pain in winning."
I think for a second. "If I get some answers."
"Plan B...will be announced soon. In the meantime, you should be resting. You'll need it."
"This isn't fair," Newt cuts in.
"Life isn't fair. If things were fair, we wouldn't be fighting a battle against the infected. We wouldn't be infected at all. People are dying, and turning as we speak, and you're worrying about wondering what secrets we're hiding. Those people are worrying about whether their going to live another day or not. Or if they're going to kill their family without knowing it. Get. Out."
I give her one last look, then turn to leave. I came here for answers, then ended it all in signing up for who knows what...And oh, how I'm going to hear it from Newt.
"You never know when to shut your hole," he says when the elevator door closes. I casually roll my eyes, hoping he's ending the conversation there. But I know he's not. "What have you done? Did you sign up for something else?"
"Did you not hear me say 'no'?"
"Did you not hear yourself say 'if I get some answers'?"
"Did you not hear me...not...get any?" Did I say that right?
"Whatever..." I watch him deep in thought for a second, obviously awaiting the next thing to yell at me about. "She said our questions will be answered."
"Ooooh my shuck," I say in a raspy voice as I make a half circle, then turn back to him, "They're not going to kill me again."
"You don't-" he ends in a yell, but the elevator opens, and people stand staring at us. We step off, and let them enter. Then we walk down the hall to the computer lab. I feel Newt's eyes burning a hole through the back of my head as we make our way down the hallways.
