The sound of a child crying was what woke Percy up. He sighed quietly, rubbing his eyes. He sat up and swung his feet out of bed, then stood up and quietly walked out of his bedroom and into the dimly lit hallway.
The crying got louder as he approached the room that it was coming from.
When he reached the room, he reached out and twisted the door handle, quietly opening the door.
The loud crying was coming from a crib in the center of the room. Percy walked over to the crib, and turned on the lamp that was beside the crib. A soft light filled the room. Percy looked into the crib, and saw a baby lying on its back, its pink cheeks wet with tears.
Percy sighed at his little brother. Well, half-brother.
"Hey, buddy," Percy said in a soft voice, reaching into the crib. "What's wrong?"
He picked up the baby, holding him close in his arms. But the baby did not respond with words, only cries.
Percy patted his brother on the back, bouncing him up and down gently in his arms. "Shh, it's okay. It's okay," Percy whispered.
But the baby continued to cry. Percy felt his shirt become damp. With his brother still in his arms, he walked around the crib and over to the window of the nursery.
There were stars in the dark sky. Percy smiled. He turned so his brother could see out the window.
"Look," he said softly. "Look at the stars."
The baby slowly raised his head from Percy's shoulder. Percy gently wiped the tears away from his brother's cheeks.
"Look at the moon," Percy said. "Isn't it bright?"
His brother seemed amazed by the sky. Slowly, his crying stopped.
"See those stars?" Percy asked, pointing to a familiar constellation of stars. "That's Zoë. Zoë was my friend. She was a very good friend, she protected me. Now she's up in the sky. She's in the sky with all the stars, and my other friend, Bob." Percy paused, looking at his brother. He was concentrated on the sky, his eyes were bright from the light of the moon. Percy smiled. "Zoë and Bob are watching over us. Making sure that we're okay. They'll make sure that we're safe."
Percy felt his brother put his head on his shoulder. Percy rubbed his back.
"I miss you, Bob," he whispered. "You too, Zoë."
He looked away from the sky and down at his brother; the baby had fallen asleep in his arms.
Percy smiled. He walked back over to the crib, and gently placed his brother down. "Goodnight, buddy," he whispered.
