"Mommy mommy mommy!"
I turned around and saw my adorable little four-year-old daughter running towards me, a paper flailing around in her hand. I picked her up as she stopped in front of me.
"What is it, Sweetheart?" I asked.
"I finished my letter for Santa!" she said with excitement, a huge smile growing on her face.
"Ooh, let me see it. Have to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes."
She giggled as I took the decorative paper from her hand. I set her down so I could read the paper.
In her messy four-year-old writing, it said,
Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is for my daddy to come home.
The short sentence brought tears to my eyes. My husband, Percy, had gone on a small quest just days before. I looked down at my daughter. She was smiling widely. It still amazed me how much she looked like her father. She had Percy's black hair and green eyes, and of course she had Percy's personality.
"That's a very nice wish, dear," I told her, handing back the paper.
"Mommy?" she said quietly.
I crouched down and looked at her. "Yes dear?"
"Will Daddy be home for Christmas?" she asked.
I hesitated before answering. "Yes. Yes, of course he will."
My daughter smiled and then ran off, wishing for a gift that might not even be possible.
