"We'll take that."
Annabeth stepped up beside me. She looked at the rest of the Athena cabin. "Malcolm, take the Athena cabin, activate plan twenty-three along the way, just like I showed you. Hold that position."
"You got it," Malcolm replied.
"I'll go with Percy," Annabeth continued. "Then we'll join you, or go wherever we're needed.
Somebody at the back of the group called out, "No detours, you two."
I felt my cheeks turn a bit warm, but I just ignored it. I explained the rest of the plan, made sure that every demigod (and Hunter) knew where they were supposed to be going, then Annabeth and I set out.
We ran around the streets for a bit, trying to find an easier way to get around. I suggested we just jump in some random car, but Annabeth didn't want to steal a car and possibly get arrested afterwards. I was going to tell her that it wouldn't matter because the car would probably be destroyed by something, but I kept my mouth shut because I knew better than to start an argument with Annabeth in the middle of a war.
After a while, we slowed down to a fast walk. I kept my eyes open for any signs of monsters, gods, demigods, any moving object. Neither Annabeth or I talked.
I heard a loud crash in the distance, and looked around to see if I could maybe spot where it came from. But there was nothing near us.
Well, kind of.
Something was falling out of the sky... And it was about to land on Annabeth.
The daughter of Athena didn't see it.
"Annabeth!" I yelled, wrapping my arm around her waist and pulling her away. I turned so my back was facing the object, and held Annabeth against a wall that I was sure wasn't there before. I tried my best to shield her with my body, to cover her head and neck.
I heard a huge crash, meaning that the thing had landed. I slowly turned my head and looked behind me. A beaten up car was lying upside down in the middle of the road.
I sighed with relief and looked back at Annabeth. Her eyes were wide and she was gripping my arms. Her back was pressed flat against the wall and she was pulling me against her. She looked really scared.
"Are you okay?" I asked quietly.
Annabeth nodded and looked at me. "Are you?"
"I'm fine."
"Thanks," she said. "For saving me."
"Any time."
She looked at me for a second before inching her face towards mine. I did the same. Our lips connected. Annabeth ran her hands down my arms, making me slightly shiver. I cupped the back of her neck with one hand and put the other on her hip. We kissed for about a minute.
But Annabeth pulled away. Thankfully, she didn't pull away too far. "I can't believe that I'm making out with you in the middle of a freaking war," she said.
"Might as well enjoy it when you can, Wise Girl," I said, smirking. "Might not ever get to do it again. You know, you could die."
"No need to remind me," she muttered, and kissed me.
I smirked and kissed her back a bit harder.
"I thought I said no detours," called someone from behind me. I pulled away from Annabeth, and saw about thirty kids standing a few feet behind us. They were all smirking.
Annabeth and I both blushed as the group of demigods ran past us.
"Come on," Annabeth said, grabbing my hand. "We gotta go kick some Titan butt."
I ran with her.
"Oh, by the way," Annabeth called over her shoulder. "That was your good luck kiss."
