"Where are you taking me?" I ask Adam as he turns to a halt in a parking spot in front some bar.
"This is a causal bar where artists take turns in performing," he says as he points to it. "I heard that tonight, a guy who's described to be breathtaking is performing live. I couldn't miss it and I thought you might enjoy it."
"Yeh sure, that sounds like fun," I reply.
"Come on let's go," he says.
As we enter the bar, the smoke of cigarettes fill my nostrils instantly. There are round tables placed in the middle and it's crowded. The walls are painted purple, and the bar has around 10 people seated on it. There's a stage in the back of the bar with brown wooden floor. I look to my left and I see Adam waving to the bar tender, a female asian, with long black shinny hair and attractive features. I can't help but feel a knot in my stomach. He then grabs a seat and gestures for me to sit down on one of the round tables.
"What would you like to drink?" He asks.
"Surprise me," I say.
"I'll be right back," he smiles and heads to the bar. Ahead of me, a man, about 30 years old, approaches the stage and holds the microphone to his mouth, "Ladies and gentleman," he says, addressing the audience.
"Are you ready for the legend?" He continues.
And the crowd cheers.
"I can't here you!" He shouts.
The crowd roars with enthusiasm. I look around searching for Adam, the show is about to start. I glance toward the bar, and I can't find him anywhere.
"Please welcome, the one and only," he clears his throat, "Adam Reindl,"
I stop in place. Did I hear him right? Did he just say Adam? I stand up to get a better view of the stage and on cue, Adam walks to the middle of the stage and holds up his guitar. He brings the microphone to his mouth, "this song is for Lesley Parker. This is my story" he says and points to my direction while smiling.
I feel like air has disappeared from my lungs. My heart is beating so fast: one..two..three.. He can sing? He's a singer? The music plays and I immediately recognize it as one of my favorites: The fray, how to save a life. All eyes are on Adam as he opens his mouth to sing:
Step one, you say, we need to talk
He walks, you say, sit down its just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Disbelief fills me. His voice is like an angel. He sings with so much passion and love. He looks up to meet my eyes and smiles while singing. And I melt.
Some sort a window to your eyes
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came
I look around and the crowd continues cheering louder. A smile is slapped to my face as I clap and sing along. I look back at Adam and he's staring at his tattoo. My heart aches at the sight of him.
He takes a breath and his voice starts to shake:
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would've stayed up with you all night
Had I know how to save a life
I understand. I understand what happened to his mom. She took a step toward the cliff, and swung her life toward the light. I want to tell him that I understand and it will all be alright in the end. I nod to him as I place my hand on my heart while tears fill my eyes. He locks his eyes with mine and immediately stops shaking, and relaxes. He smiles back and nods.
Adam, I understand, I understand, I understand..
