Chapter 37

We kept our wands in each other's faces for a moment until Caleb lowered his wand. A smile broke out on his face, and he ducked under my wand before giving me a tight hug. I sat stiffly, and he withdrew, seeing my pained expression.

"Cat what's wrong? The day I woke up I thought you had left me. While I was passed out I had an odd vision, you were there, and we were in a pure Kings Cross. We promised each other we would both come back, and I left. When I woke up, you were gone, and your cabin was ransacked, so everyone thought you were dead! Where have you been?" He said this all very quickly as I looked him over. He had grown a lot the past two months, maybe all the way to five foot. I was still stuck at four foot, four, but the immortality of the Hunters hadn't helped. His eyes had lost its sparkle, but as we stood there, it began to return. He was as tan as ever, and everything else was just like it had been the last time I had seen him.

He cupped my face in his hands, and peered up into my eyes, "Cat, what's wrong? Where have you been?"

I took a deep breath and pulled away, "I-I have to go." I ran to the fireplace and withdrew the floo powder in my pocket. As I drew a shaky breath, I spoke, "I am really sorry Caleb, I really am. Camp Half-Blood." The last thing I saw of my old house was Caleb sending an IM by the sink. The moment I arrived there was an alarm raised throughout the camp. Was Caleb really trying that hard to keep me from leaving? I ducked under a row of hydra arrows fired at me. There was a blond boy who tried to sweep my feet out from under me, but I jumped out of the way. Just as I was about to start running up the hill, Annabeth intercepted me.

"Don't take another step if you want to live." She held her dagger in her hand, and Percy was by her side in an instant.

"I am really sorry Annabeth and Percy. I have to do this. I think you may forgive me when you figure out where I have been." I swung my bow under her feet and flipped Percy's sword so that he smacked himself in the forehead with the flat of his blade, therefore knocking him unconscious. Annabeth was scrambling to get back up when I brought the corner of my bow down on the back of her head, sending her unconscious as well. No other demigod stood in my way as I ran the rest of the way over the hill. Once I was through the borders of Camp, I called Artemis' name. There was a shimmering light at the bottom of the hill and Artemis appeared. Her eyes narrowed as she looked behind me. I reached her and she took my wrist.

"What on earth did you do?" She twisted me around to see the blond boy I had dodged earlier running down the hill after me. I opened my mouth to respond, but she interrupted me. "Never mind, you must tell me once we get to camp." The last thing I saw was the boy diving towards us as Thalia's Pine disappeared from view.

I opened my eyes as the smell of pine filled my nose. The Hunters' camp was already set up, and my fellow Hunters turned to see me appear. They drew their bows as they took in the scene. I turned around just as the blond boy from earlier was turned to a jackalope.

"Hunters, go hunt. I must speak to Catherine alone." The girls all left after the animal as Artemis raked her gaze across the camp. She led me to her tent, and sat down. I followed her lead and closed the tent door. "Catherine, explain. I sent you out for a day to take a small break, and the next time I see you, it is when you have a male camper trying to prevent you from leaving camp."

I took a deep breath, "It all started when I snuck into camp this morning..." I told her everything, all the way up to the moment I called for her. I paused when I thought about the moment I looked into Caleb's eyes and had seen all the pain and the hurt.

Artemis noticed my pause, and commented, "Is there anything else you wish to tell me? Anything at all Catherine? There is something, it is just your decision to tell me."

I took a deep breath and looked into the goddess' eyes, "Artemis, I-" my voice caught in my throat, "I need to leave the hunters."

Her gaze softened, "I expected as much. You lasted longer than I would have thought. Your connection with the male made it rather hard to retrieve you to the hunters."

I cocked my head, puzzled, "What connection?"

She laughed, "A very rare connection. It is not from you wizard side, nor from your godly side, but from both. This connection is only established when a female demiwitch and a male demiwizard are born with in a month of each other, and both come from families that know each other relatively well. The two will always find each other, and when one dies, the other will die within a month's time. When the two are separated, if one did not expect it, serious tolls will be taken on the body, and if the two are not reunited within a year, they will slowly fade from existence. They also have a knack for finding each other without knowing they are looking for the other."

I frowned, "So another demiwizard and I have a connection that makes us like living magnets?"

Artemis let out a soft laugh, "I think you know exactly who that demiwizard is. You can pack up once I release you, and I will bring you where ever you would like to go."

I shifted, "So... how do you release me?"

Artemis closed her eyes, "I, Artemis goddess of the hunter, release Catherine Granger from the Hunters." It felt like a huge weight had lifted off my chest, and a silvery haze in my vision I had not realized I had been seeing disappeared. Artemis slowly rose and left the tent. I follow suit, and walked to my tent. My belongings were scattered about, and it took a bit to gather them. There was the sound of the tent flap opening. I turned around to see Zoë entering the tent.

She smiled comfortingly at me, "Keep the tent Catherine, as a parting gift. Lady Artemis explained it all to me. It is a pity you have this connection, you would have made a good lieutenant."

I frowned, "but you are lieutenant, Zoë."

She shook her head, "Not everything lives forever." With that parting line she ducked out of the tent. I stared at the flaps, pondering her words. I shook it off after a little bit, and stepped out of the tent. It collapsed, and I slipped it into my pack. I took one last look around camp and let out a sigh before leaving to find Artemis. Once I found her, I told her to take me home. She smiled, and held out her hand. I took it, and I knew that I would not be seeing the hunters' camp for a long time. My vision faded, and I was brought home.

I know it's only 1,250 words and I promised 1,500 next will hopefully be this long as well. I was listening to Shawn Mendes' album "Handwritten" while I wrote this.
