Chapter 46
"WAKE UP CATHY!" I shot up out of my bed to see all of my friends surrounding me. My head almost collided with Alisa's, and we both let out a short scream. Alisa fell off the bed and onto the floor, laughing. Everyone soon was overcome with the giggles, until Raven was able to keep a straight face and stand up straight. She waited until the rest of us were able to keep our laughter at bay, and then started shoving my stuff into my trunk. As she packed it, I noticed she was not doing it very orderly, therefore less room was available. Mum finally came in, and with a flourish of her wand, my trunk was suddenly packed nicely, with room to spare.
"The train is leaving at eleven like usual, and it is nine thirty. All of you need to make sure you are ready to leave, and then we will all eat a brunch sort of thing together. I need to have a word with Catherine for a few minutes." Fleur watched them all leave the room before turning back to me. "Since we missed all of your past birthdays, we decided to get you a present to last long enough to make up for all of the birthdays we missed." Dad walked in with a large carrier covered in a blanket. My hands flew to my mouth as the parcel was set on my bed. They both watched in amusement as I shook my head back and forth, my mouth flopping like a fish out of water, unable to formulate any sounds.
"You shouldn't have"
"But we did!" Mum grabbed the top of the cloth and ripped it off to reveal a small, black ball of fur. It was small enough to fit in my palm, and had wide, yellow eyes. As it stared up at me, a tiny, high-pitched meow emitted from its tiny jaws. I looked at my parents with a look that said, "Are you fudging kidding me?" They smiled at me, and I turned back to the tiny kitten sitting before me. It continued to stare up at me as I unlatched the cage door, and drew it out of the cage. Its little claws clung to me as it rose higher and higher in the air.
"Do you know if it is a male or a female?" I turned to my parents. Dad informed me that it was a boy. "Hey buddy, Ima call you Noctis. You alright with that?" He just meowed again, and stared at me. "Ima take that as a yes. You are my little Latin midnight." He meowed again, and I found a small, little, sapphire collar in the bedding of his cage. A tiny bell was attached to it, and I secured the collar around his neck before holding him up to my face.
"Cathy," Noctis started to lick my nose as mum talked. "You should get downstairs, your friends are waiting." I nodded and walked out of the room with the kitten still licking my nose. Dad sighed behind me, and I saw my luggage and the carrier fly down the steps ahead of me. When we got down to the main room, Noctis finally stopped licking my nose. Caleb smiled at me, and nodded to the chair next to him. I sat down in the chair to wait for my food.
"Hey," He leaned over and whispered in my ear when I sat down. "It's good to be back with you again." He smiled, and when my parents were talking with Tom, he quickly kissed my cheek. I looked at him, and he just gave me a small smile. I gave him a quick smile back, and turned to my food, which had just been placed in front of me, and examined the meal. Scrambled eggs and sausage were in a checker pattern, and a fork and knife were next to my plate. My parents sat down on my other side, and we all started eating.
"So," Mum started. "We will try to get you on the train by quarter to. I would rather you have too much time rather than not having enough time." She stopped, and stared at me. "Cathy, is that blush I am seeing?" My eyes widened, and I blushed even more. Caleb took my hand under the table and squeezed it comfortingly. I tried for a smile, and shook my head in my mum's direction.
"If you want us to be on the train by ten forty-five, we had better hurry, it is ten now. We should quickly eat breakfast and then head out." I looked down as I talked, and then shoved food in my mouth when I ended. Everyone else followed suit, and soon we were all boarding the Knight Bus and heading on our way to King's Cross station. Once there, we walked at a leisurely pace towards platforms nine and ten. The station was bizarrely empty of muggles, and I only saw a few families with students that bore Hogwarts trunks. Mum went through with Kevin first. I watched as Alisa and Jacob then went together, and Raven and Xavier went together. Caleb and I were next, and dad would bring the rear with Ginny. We burst through the barrier, and saw that the train had just pulled up.
"GINNY" I turned as the boy and girl from Flourish and Blotts raced over to Ginny. That boy who was behind me that day spotted me, and walked away quickly. I glimpsed Cody walking with his parents. The seven of us all boarded the train, and found an empty compartment. It was slightly crammed, and I was stuck between Caleb and Kevin, while Alisa was on Kevin's other side. Raven was crammed next to the window, while Xavier was next to her, then Zach and Jacob sat on the same side.
"Over the holidays," Xavier started. "I got a toad, I thought it would be a good thing to have a pet, and an owl would be a little too much work for me." We all laughed, and he put it to the side. We began to talk, just random topics, and it finally hit me. We were going back to Hogwarts already. Suddenly Xavier jumped up. "My toad is missing!" I persuaded him to sit down and relax while I go find it. He nodded, and I went on my way. I paused at each compartment to ask them if they had seen a toad. I got to a compartment with only two boys.
"Have you seen a toad? A boy named Xavier has lost one." They both shook their heads. I noticed that the boy with the red-blond hair had his wand out. "Are you doing magic? Let's see then." I sat down promptly across from him. He cleared his throat, and recited a spell that did not seem nearly like a real spell.
"Are you sure that's a real spell? It doesn't sound like one" I tapped my wand on his rat's head, and whispered a spell I had learned in Transfiguration last year. The rat turned yellow, just as I had tried to. The boy next to the window laughed. I looked at him, and gasped. "You're Cody Potter! Are you related to Harry Potter by chance?" The other boy laughed, and I turned to him, "And you are?"
"Christian Weasley"
"Pleasure," I looked out the window and saw the sky darkening. "You both should change into your robes, we should be arriving soon." I swept out of the compartment. Not one person had seen a toad, so I returned to my friends. "Sorry Xavier," I smiled apologetically, "No one has seen him. I am sure you will find him soon." He nodded, and we returned to chatting like before.
