Chapter 40

Tall, cloaked figures stood around something several feet before me. The sky was dark and filled with clouds. Rain poured down, and trees surrounded us. I walked slowly towards the figures, and they parted to reveal a pile of bodies. I recognized several of the faces, pale and unmoving. Caleb, Mum, Dad, Hermione, Raven, Alisa, Jacob, Harry, Ronald, Dumbledore, Jacob, Xavier, Kevin, Andrew and Jessica Malfoy, McGonagall, Hagrid, Percy Jackson, Annabeth, Grover, Grazer, Luke, Chiron, Clarisse, Travis and Connor Stoll, and Hailey were only some of the bodies that lay dead at the feet of Voldemort himself. He laughed and fingered his wand. I watched as he smiled at me, and I turned and ran.

Death Eaters loomed behind every tree, leering at me and doing nothing. Voldemort's laugh rang through my head, loud and clear. I broke out of the trees to see Hogwarts. Flames flew out of every window I could see, and screams came from students and teachers trapped inside. I kept running, wishing there was something I could do. Suddenly I saw a figure standing by the entrance doors. I ran toward it. Zach's face soon was visible in the smoke.

He smiled and reached for me, and I watched helplessly as flames encircled him, and took his life as well. I could feel tears cascading down my face as the screams withdrew as more people lost their lives. Voldemort's laugh sounded again, and I turned around. He stood there in the haze, smiling as everyone I knew perished. I begged him to kill me, but all he did was shake his head. The Death Eaters started walking up behind him, laughing and smiling as well. Once face stuck out from all of them. Lucius Malfoy laughed with the others as if his children were not dead.

I let out a bloodcurdling scream as they all laughed. The ghosts of my friends, fellow students, and teachers started to surround me, pleading for me to help them. Some cried how I could have saved them, and some sat silently. The flames stayed away from the Death Eaters and I, and the smoke rose up like a wall, not coming any closer than three feet away from any human who live. The ghosts of those who passed were swallowed up in the smoke, and I ran at the crowd of the living. They continued to laugh and grin down at me as I begged them to kill me. One by one, they all walked into the flames until only Voldemort and I were left. He stopped laughing, and nodded towards me before walking into the flames as well.

I tried to run after him, but the flames and smoke seemed to part for me. Soon all I could see were flames I could not touch. Even my tears avoided my mouth and nose. Nothing would let me die, and all that was left was the flames and I. There was not one soul left to comfort me, not one way I could end this suffering. Every second I wished this could end, and that this was all a nightmare. I pinched myself, and was horrified that I could feel it. Panic seized me as I cried out for anyone to hear me.

Suddenly the flames all died out, and my breath caught in my throat. Bodies surrounded me, most unrecognizable from the burns. Bones lay scattered about, and not one thing moved. Hogwarts was reduced to a pile of rubble. Nothing had survived the flames but me. The sky was clear, and no moon was in the sky. The stars shone down towards me as if nothing had happened. I ran from nothing, not knowing where I was going.

"This was your entire fault. You could have saved us. Now you must live with the guilt. Live with the way you took our lives." The voices surrounded me. I let out a scream, and continued to do so until my voice was gone. I found a large bolder, and a rope. I then proceeded to tie one end to the rock, and one end to my leg.

Then I threw it where I knew the lake was deep. The moment my head went under, a bubble of air surrounded my head. I tried to get rid of it, but nothing I did would make the water break through. Frantic, I untied the rock around my ankle, and floated to the top of the water. The moment my head broke the surface, I was thrown to the shore. Tears ran down my face until the tears could not come. The night was silent, as I lay there unmoving, and distraught. I closed my eyes, knowing there was nothing I could do.
