Chapter 22

Sabrina’s POV

We had gathered in the lobby of the experiment center to create a plan to get to California, but the lobby sent chills up and down my spine. I remembered it to well, it’s been two years and I still remember every detail, the feel, the smell, even the taste. And I felt like a prisoner again.

“Sabrina?” Josh asked waving his hand in front of my face

“Oh, sorry.” I said snapping out of my trance “Where were we?”

We figured we couldn’t just jump on a plane, it was too expensive, plus we didn’t have any money, and Mark would probably be monitoring the airport for even a tiny sight of me.

“What about a train?” Janelle asked

“Again, Money.” I said sighing

Suddenly everyone’s eyes got big and they were staring at me. I heard the click of a gun being loaded and the breathing of someone behind me.

“How many freakin guards do I have to kill?” I asked turning around and I smiled when I saw the bright white lab coat.

“What are you guys going to do?” the scientist asked still holding the gun to my head

“You were really gonna try and shot me weren’t you?” I asked looking at her

“What are you guys trying to do?” she asked again

“What’s your name?” I asked “First name.”

“Becky,” she said “why?”

“Well Becky,” I said smiling still “Why do you want to know?”

“You can’t answer a question with a question.” She said her knuckles turning white from her grip on the gun

“I believe I can.” I responded

“I want to help you guys.” She said he grip losing

I heard Alice giggle from behind me.

“Cause it totally help us by you holding a gun to her head.” Janelle said

“Why should we trust you?” I asked hoping she would back down

I saw her pull up her sleeve of the lab coat and revealed needle marks. “Because I don’t know what they put in me.”

I turned my head and looked away. I was becoming nauseous. I heard Becky drop her gun to the floor.

Quickly I ran to the nearest trash can and started to vomit. I felt someone rub up and down my back and hold back my hair.

“What’s wrong?” Steven asked while still rubbing my back

“The mutation is killing me.” I said chuckling and faking a smile and his hands stopped

“How long…” he asked but I interrupted him

“They took me when I was two.” I felt him let go of my hair “Escaped when I was twenty.”

“They did eighteen years of experiments on you?” he asked looking into my eyes.

I wiped my mouth and nodded “I wouldn’t die so they just injected me with more.”

“The main part of this is to find something to keep you alive isn’t it?” he asked grabbing my wrist

“And payback, for everyone to be free.” I whispered and he let go of my wrist

“I won’t let it kill you.” His words surprised me as his hand rubbed up and down my back again

“Why should you care?” I asked through my teeth

“Cause I thought I should be sorry for myself and you have it worse.”

“Everyone who’s cared for me has ended up dead.” I told him “Or pretty close to dead.”

“Guess I’ll have to be the first to change that.” He said and I smiled but I felt all the eyes in the room on us

“I have an idea.” I said turning towards Becky “You have a keycard right?” she nodded

“Okay who knows how to drive?” I asked
