Chapter 34
Kayla’s POV
Survival instinct kicked in almost instantly. I have to protect Haley from whatever it was that attacked us. And Glen...I guess. It all came down to fight or flight.
"They're gaining on us." I whispered. Glen nodded in agreement. Haley shifted uncomfortably.
"So, what do we do?" She asked.
I looked into her eyes. I could tell she was scared. I was too. But I wasn't about to show it. I had to be strong, for both of us. Denial was my best friends.
"We have two choices." I explained. "Get out of here as soon as possible and go to the next city, maybe a more isolated area. We disappear and stay invisible." Haley bit her lip. Glen stared at me with feeling less eyes.
"And what's plan B?" He asked. I returned his cold gaze.
"Nothing." I replied. "We stay where we are, wait for them to come to us. And when they do come, because they will, we stand our ground. We fight...again." Glen slowly grinned.
"I like Plan B." He said.
I turned to Haley. "What do you want to do?" I asked. Haley shifted uncomfortably.
"We should leave. That last attack...it was pretty powerful. They're getting stronger. I'm not sure if we're ready to face them again. Not yet anyway." Haley replied. I nodded, understanding. Glen stared down at me menacingly.
"Well, looks like you're the tie breaker." He sneered. I closed my eyes and sighed deeply, silently thinking.
"We should go." I finally answered. "Haley's right, we're not strong enough yet."
Glen instantly tensed. "Is that it? We're going to run because you think we're weak? Are you going to let them hunt us like animals?" Glen shot at me.
I returned his angry glare with one of my own. "We have no choice, Glen! They're stronger than us! That last attack proved that they're more than capable of bringing us to our knees." I shot back.
"So now we're cowards?" Glen shouted.
"No! We're surviving!" I screamed. Glen froze, glaring at me. His jaw clenched and his eyes flashed dangerously.
"Fine!" He snapped. "What's the plan?" I relaxed slightly, knowing I had won.
"The first thing we need to do is find more people like us. It's what we should have done the before. We'll be stronger when there's more of us. After we find more, then we'll talk about fighting back." I explained.
"How do we find more?" Haley asked. I closed my eyes, willing this nightmare to end. When I reopened them, I looked directly at Haley.
"I need to try to send another message." I whispered.
Haley gasped. "Don't! The last time you tried, you got hurt!" Haley cried.
"I need to try again! If I can reach one...just one...then we might have a fighting chance!" I argued.
"And if the doctors pick up the message?" Glen asked. I turned to him.
"They already know we're here." I replied. Glen raised an eyebrow. "I'll send the message, then wait for a reply. If none comes in two days, we get out and go someplace else." I explained. I narrowed my eyes at Glen. "You've got a problem with that?" I asked.
Glen surprised me by smiling. "No. By all means, lead on fearless leader" He smirked.
Frowning, I turned to Haley. "OK. I'm going to send it. Things might be scary for a little while, but don't worry. I'll pull through. I'll be in your mind, so if things get too bad, just push back a little and I'll snap back. Got it?" I asked. Haley nodded. "Good." I whispered, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I'm trusting you." Haley gulped and nodded again.
I sighed. "OK..." I mumbled, sitting down on the ground. "Here goes nothing." I closed my eyes, and expanded my mind...
