Chapter 32

Kayla’s POV

Food. That was the one thing on my mind right now. I stared across the street at the hotdog vender, as if staring at it would make the hotdogs magically rise and float over to my mouth. Beside me, Haley moaned and clutched her stomach.

"Why do the fates mock me?!" She cried. Glen glared at me.

"Come on! We're hungry!" He nagged.

"I'm thinking! What do you want me to do, waltz over ask for some? News flash, buddy! We don't got no money! Or do you expect them to give us the hotdogs for free?" I shot back.

Glen's glare deepened. Haley seemed surprised by my outburst. I ignored them both, concentrating at the task at hand. We were all hungry. We were all tired. This lead to a deadly combination. I thought about how I could get the hot dogs. Could I posses someone and have them buy us some? No. That would be wrong. And it would be similar to stealing. Besides, I didn't want to posses another human.

The thoughts from my last possession still rang in my head. I had to think of another way. Beside me, Glen tapped his foot impatiently.

"You know...you're making this harder than it needs to be." He said. "Here. I'll just use my powers and-"

"No! Don't!" I cried quickly, interrupting Glen.

Glen tensed and looked down at me. I had to think quickly, or Glen would use his powers. And I wasn't sure if I was ready to find out what, exactly, his powers were.

"I'll...I'll, umm..." I stuttered, scanning for a quick solution. It came in the most unlikely of forms. "There!" I exclaimed, pointing to the sky. Haley and Glen followed my gaze.

"A seagull?" Glen asked. "How is a seagull going to help us get food?" I grinned.

"I'll posses the seagull and use it to snatch us some lunch." I explained. Haley frowned.

"Won't that be stealing?" she asked. I shook my head.

"Not if the person doesn't want it anymore." I replied, nodding over to the garbage cans a few feet away. Glen wrinkled his nose.

"You're going to make us eat garbage?!" Glen exclaimed. "Are you crazy?" I sighed, shaking my head.

"It's that or nothing." I said.

I then turned away from Glen, not waiting for a reply. I focused on the seagull flying up ahead. I reached out or it with my mind, touching the edges of its consciousness. Then, I took over. My mind left my body and went into the seagull. In the blink of an eye, I was flying. My wings pushed the air from under my wings. My eyes darted scanning for food. Instinct was stronger than thought. I was a seagull. The first thing I noticed about the seagull was that it was really, really dumb. It's thoughts consisted of three things. Eat. Sleep. And poop. The flying thing was pure instinct, almost as involuntary as breathing. I instantly rejoiced in my choice. The poor seagull didn't even realize it was under my control.

I swooped over the mob of people, gathering around the hotdog stand. I was looking for one specific thing. My timing had to be perfect. Then I saw it. A man's grip on his hotdog slipped. As gravity took over, I dove, swooping down and snatching the hotdog before it hit the ground. The man let out a yelp of surprise, which quickly turned to anger. He yelled and threw something at me. I dodged and flew over to where Haley and Glen were waiting.

Landing in front of Haley, I dropped the hotdog onto her lap. Haley let out a squeal of glee and snatched the hotdog and bit into it. I released my grip on the seagull's mind and returned to my own body. Once I was back in my body, I turned to Glen and smirked.

"Simple." I grinned. Glen opened his mouth to say something, but was quickly interrupted when Haley screamed. I turned to Haley who was clutching her head, doubling over as if in pain.

"Haley!" I cried, rushing over to my friend.

Suddenly, Glen screamed, dropping to his knees and yanking at his hair. Panic set in. My instincts told me to run. But from what? What was going on? I grabbed Haley by the shoulders.

"What's wrong, Haley? Tell me what's wrong!" I yelled. I had to stop this! Haley looked up at me, eye filled with pain and fear.

"Kayla..." She gasped.

Then the pain hit me. It was an intense, burning white pain. It came like a flash of light, pulsing through my mind. I screamed, falling to the ground. Pain overrode my mind. I grabbed at the dirt, grasping fistfuls of grass. The pain was everywhere. It was everything. It pulsed through me like a heartbeat. I had to find a way out! Out of the pain!

I pushed against it. It was like moving through a pool filled with syrup. It was slow, but progressing. I pushed myself, trying to free myself of the pain. Then, like walking from a cold room out into the blazing sun, I felt it. It was lifted off of me. As quickly as it came, it left. I felt my limbs go limp, and everything went numb.
