Chapter 16

Kayla's POV

Night fell quickly. We decided to take a break from hiking and make camp. M.G. gathered the firewood and I made the fire. I stared into the flames. M.G. was sitting across from me, whittling at a twig.

“So, what’s your power?” She asked. I looked up at her.

“You haven’t figured it out yet?” I asked. She shook her head. I sighed. “My power is possession. I can leave my body and enter someone else’s and take over their mind.” I gave a small smile, even though it was far from funny. M.G. looked at me.

“Possession…” She echoed. I nodded. She was quiet then, lost in thought.

“Are you scared?” I asked. She looked up at me.

“No.” She replied. I raised an eyebrow.

“You should be. I am a weapon. I can take over you, use your power. Everything you have access to would be under my control. And you could only sit and watch from the back of your own mind as I tear you apart. I could make you die, and it wouldn’t harm me. How do you think I broke out? They were about to have me exterminated The doctors may be humans, but they’re not dumb. They knew what I was capable of , and it scared them.” I paused. “I’m a monster.” I whispered. The girl looked at me through the flames, eyed blinking. “So…” I said, calmer now. “Are you scared now?”

“No.” She answered. I couldn’t hide my surprise.

“Did you not hear a word I just said? I was created to be the ultimate weapon!” I exclaimed.

“I know.” She replied.

“Then why aren’t you scared?” I asked.

“Because I trust you….”

I stared at her, mouth agape. “You…trust me?” I repeated. She nodded.

“I know you were probably made to invade people’s minds to get information on weapons or whatever from U.S.A enemies…but that’s what they thought you were. You’re something more. You’re….” M.G. paused for a moment, thinking of the correct word to use. “You’re you.” She finally said. I was silent for a moment. Me. I was me. Not a weapon. Not a thing. But a person, with life. And I had this power. What could I do with it? Were there others like me? I looked over to the girl.

“Kayla.” I whispered.

“What?” The girl asked, looking at me in surprise.

“Before they caught me. My name was….is Kayla.” I explained. The girl stared at me for a moment, then smiled.

“Haley.” She said. “My name is Haley….”
