Love this chapter, it kinda gets some stuff out, plus it's kinda a filler that was needed. Vote and Comment if you like.

Chapter 23

 Kayla’s POV

I watched him. This wasn't the first time I had lied, and it probably wouldn't be the last. So why did it feel so wrong?

The feeling ate at me from within the pit of my stomach. I knew the reason. It was because for the first time in my life, someone cared about me and I betray their trust by lying.

But I had to. I lied before, about not remembering him from the escape. But I didn't know anything about this boy yet. And from what I had seen from the brief glance I had gotten from within his mind, he was powerful. And power usually meant danger. All of my kind had learned that.

Still, curiosity got the better of me. And judging by the fact that Haley didn't put up much of a fight, curiosity had gotten the better of her, too. The boy would stay....for now. Or, at least until he proved to be a threat.

I stared at him now, sitting across from me in front of the fire. I was still shaken from my last encounter with his mind, so I tried to read him the old fashioned way. They say eyes are the windows to the soul. If that's true, the boy's soul was blacker than midnight. What troubled me was that he stared right back studying me with the same intensity that I studied him. Neither one of dared turn our eyes away.

We each took the other's challenged and bore holes into the other's soul from across the flame. Haley seemed uncomfortable with the silence and tried to penetrate it with useless babble. Mostly asking the boy questions. The boy's answers were always brief and blunt.

"So, how exactly did you escape?" Haley asked.

"Ran." The boy replied curtly. "That's what we did, too. I think it was the best way of escape.

I know a few, like us, who tried to stay and fight....I don't think they made it.

“I wonder how many others escaped." Haley babbled. She paused here, looking expectantly at the boy, as if he would answer. He didn't.

"Anyway, I don't think I caught your name. What was it again?" Haley asked.

"Glen." The boy replied hesitantly.

Ahhh. So he had a name. How interesting. Haley looked thoughtful.

"What's your power, Glen?" She asked.

This is when he stiffened. He shifted uncomfortably and broke eye-contact with me. Clearing his throat, he fidgeted. I felt the corners of my mouth twitch as a smile threatened to form. It seemed as though we had ourselves a touchy subject. It was to be expected. My powers were also an uncomfortable discussion that I liked to avoid.

"I...I, Umm.....I..." Glen stuttered.

"Well, it's getting late. I think it would be wise to try and sleep. After all, it's harder to defend yourself with fatigue." I quickly changed the subject, relieving Glen of having to answer the question.

"Good idea!" Haley said, yawning. Glen looked relived.

"I've got guard duty." I announced, standing up. Haley curled up near the fire.

"Good. Wake it up when it's my shift." She mumbled, closing her eyes.

Glen laid down a few feet away, hands clasped behind his head. He watched me as I circled the fire. I met his gaze and smiled.

"Sweet dreams." I murmured, and kicked sand into the dying fire, smothering the flames. And the world went black...
