Okay, some people are asking me to put pics up of the characters, and I don't really want to because I think it ruins the picture you have of the person in your mind. So here's a long chapter! Read and Enjoy!
Chapter 39
Kayla’s POV
I watched Haley take off towards the cars. A mixture of caution and relief welled up inside me. Relief screamed at me to take off after her. Caution fought to run in the opposite direction. The internal battle was raging and neither side was winning. So, instead, I just stood there. Glen saw my dilemma and smiled.
"Here." He said, pushing something down on my head. Surprised, I Jerked it off and looked at it. A black baseball cap rested in my hands. I gave a questioning look at Glen.
"I found it over by the swing set." He explained. "You could use it to cover your hair. You know...the color thing."
I scowled and tucked my hair, yanking the baseball cap down on top of it. "Thanks." I muttered.
Glen smirked. "You're welcome. Now, come on! We'd better catch up with Haley before she does something stupid like get us all recaptured." Glen ordered.
Shooting him one last glare, just to let him know that I still didn't like him, I took off running after Haley. It was weird, running like this. I didn't understand how it could be different, since I had been running for as long as I could remember, and it always seemed the same. It took me a while to realize that for once in my life, I was running towards something instead of away. When this realization hit me, I couldn't help but smile. I reached Haley as soon as she reached the cars. Huffing, I grabbed her shoulder, holding her back slightly.
"Get ready to run if necessary." I whispered. Haley shot me a look that looked like a mixture of annoyance and yet, at the same time, understanding. Glen jogged up to us, panting.
"Tired, Glen?" I smirked, not resisting the urge to get in a good jab.
"Shut....up....you girls....run...fast...." Glen huffed in-between breaths.
The door to the first car opened, and I thrust myself into alert mode. I gently pushed Haley behind me, putting myself out in front. I was tense, ready to take control of a mind if I needed to. I was already pushing at the mind, trying to find out the person's intentions. Whoever it was must have felt me, because they opened their mind and sent waves of calming thoughts towards me.
Then they stepped into view. She was older than us, with red hair and green eyes. She turned towards me, sizing me up, just as I was doing to her.
"Are you the one who sent the message?" She asked.
I hesitated, pushing further into her mind. To my surprise, she pushed back, keeping me at bay. Who was this girl? Taking a chance, I slowly gave a nod. Suddenly, one of the other car's doors swung open. Instinct kicked in and the only thing on my mind was, 'It's an Attack!'
"Haley, get down!" I screamed.
Haley half-fell as I half-pushed her to the ground. Facing the attackers, I forced myself into their minds and took hold. Not taking complete control, yet sending out a sound similar to that of a high-pitched shriek. Suddenly, I felt a resistance. A barrier between me and the minds. It shoved me back, forcing me back into my own mind. Letting out a shriek, I fell back, trying to collect my thoughts.
OK, can't hurt them mentally...time to go for a more physical approach. I lunged for the closest person: The girl with the green eyes. I heard Haley scream out my name. The girl saw me coming and stretched her hand out. Suddenly, I hit a barrier. It felt like I was hitting a brick wall. The air in front of me rippled. I heard Haley scream and Glen let out a curse. I fell onto the ground, landing on my back. I lay still panting. I heard Haley scream out my name again and heard footsteps pounding around me.
Focus, Kayla. Focus. I reached out and took control of another mind. A different mind. The first mind I could reach. A Hawk's mind. The poor bird must have been circling overhead. As soon as I took control, I dove. The girl didn't see me overhead. She didn't suspect a thing. I pulled up at the last moment, gripping her hair and pulling, trying to do anything to distract her. She screamed and batted at me with her hands. One of them smacked me in the head and I fluttered, stunned.
When I turned back, the girl was gone. How the heck had she disappeared?! Suddenly, something grabbed me from behind. I let out a hawk-like cry and flapped madly, trying to escape. Dang! The girl had invisibility powers too! Still squawking, I heard her near my ear...or whatever hawks hear out of.
"We're not going to hurt you! Calm down and listen!"
Ha! Could've fooled me. But I stopped struggling and released the hawk's mind, returning to my own body. Haley was beside me, shaking me. When I opened my eyes, she gave a little cry of joy. Leaping to my feet, I turned and faced the girl. She had become visible now, and released the now very-ticked-off-birdy. The hawk fluttered around for a moment, trying to get its bearings, and then flew off, screeching its annoyance. Glaring at the girl, I crossed my arms.
"I'm listening." I growled. The girl returned my glare, but remained calm.
"You sent a message to us." She said calmly. I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye and spun to see a boy climbing out of the car door that had opened. When he saw me glaring at him, he turned several shades of white and raised his hands in defense.
"We’re not here to hurt you." I heard the girl say.
Turning back to her, I saw a blonde-haired boy with icy blue eyes had joined her at her side. He glared icy daggers at me, arms crossed. His stance told me he was alert and ready for action. I liked him already.
"How do I know I can trust you?" I asked.
The girl held out her hands. "You don't." She replied. "But I don't know if I can trust you either."
I sized her up one more time, then relaxed. Haley let out a sigh of relief. The girl must have seen the changed because she smiled.
"Let's start over." She said, holding out her hand. "I'm Sabrina." Haley walked forward and took it, shaking it eagerly.
"I'm Haley." She introduced. "And this is Glen and -"
"Phantom." I quickly interrupted before she could give away my real name.
Haley turned and gave me a quizzical look. Glen shot me a similar look but said nothing. I shot them both a look that said, "You-had-better-keep-your-mouths-shut-and-I'll-explain-everything-later." I looked straight into the girl's, Sabrina's, eyes which were full of confusion.
"You can call me Phantom." I said. Something unreadable flickered behind Sabrina's eyes and she smiled.
In a voice filled with trust she said, "I think we'll get along just fine."
