Chapter 29

Kayla’s POV

Shaken, but OK. I think that's the main thing, the fact that I was OK. Alive.

"We need to get out of here." I whispered.

"What? Why?" Haley asked, surprised.

I began to stand up, and stumbled slightly. Haley grabbed my arm and helped me up.

"I just did a really stupid thing." I replied.

Haley looked at me, confused. I opened my mouth to explain, but Glen beat me to it.

"She's just sent out an open message. If anyone had the ability, they could track the message strait to this location. staying here would put us in danger of being found." he explained. I nodded in agreement.

"Well, what if others like us heard? What if they come? Shouldn't we just stay put to see if others come?" Haley asked. I shook my head.

"Too risky. It's better to suspect the worse." I replied.

Haley shifted uncomfortably. "So, where do we go?" she asked.

"Preferably a city. It'll be easier for us to blend in." I said.

Glen gave a short laugh. "Not with your hair, it won't." He said, gesturing to my head.

Walking over to the now-burned-out fire, I took a fist full of the ashes and poured it onto my hair, rubbing it in until my hair turned a pale charcoal color. Straitening, I turned to Glen and Haley.

"This'll do for now." I said. Haley looked shocked. Glen, on the other hand, looked satisfied.

"Let's go." He ordered, starting to walk away.

Walking up to Haley, I placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry, Haley. On the bright side, though, we get to see a real city!" I said, trying to cheer her up.

It seemed to work, because a small smile appeared on her face. "Yeah. The city." She echoed.

She then made eye-contact with me. "Are you sure you're all right?" She asked.

I forced a laugh. "Me? I'm indestructible!" I replied. Haley gave a small smile.

"If only that were true." She sighed. Turning, we began the second hike into the desert...
