Chapter 56

Kayla’s POV

You know, it was funny, that despite all that was going on, and despite the fact that I had a bullet in my stomach and was passed out, my mind, my subconscious, was anything but weak. In fact, it was in full hyper-mode.

It's kind of scary. What if this happened when I was asleep? I would never be able to get a good nights rest. Not that I did anyway. Is it even possible to sleep-posses? I should really be more careful about that. My subconscious was weird, a dark room surrounded by mirrors with a glass floor that was covered in a shallow pool of water. I stood in the middle of it all.

Around me, things flashed. It had taken me a while to realize it was events. Past and present. My memories were flashing in the mirrors and in the pool were the present events. Through the ripples, I could see Brett driving, I could see Sabrina getting POed, I could see another group of mutants: trapped in cages and contemplating death,...I could even see the president filing out his paperwork.

I reached down into the pool and sorted through the events, reaching until I reached Sabrina. I grabbed hold of her mind and drew her close. We don't have much time. I told her. I don't know where he's taking us. He shot me, I passed out, you have to help us!

After I sent the message, I released Sabrina and settled back down into my pool. Then a thought washed over me. If I could communicate while unconscious, why couldn't I posses someone? Searching through my pool, I found the image of Brett. Reaching through the water, I grabbed hold of his mind and hung on. I felt a ripping feeling and I screamed in pain as my mind merged with his.

Kayla! Brett thought in surprise. No, you can't be here! You're...You're unconscious! I didn't answer Brett, I just focused on gaining control. My mind overpowered his and I found myself in the driver's seat going down the highway at 80 mph. Turning in my seat, I looked back at Haley and Glen.

"Guys!" I snapped. Haley looked up at me and Glen continued his glaring. "I've got control of him. It's a weak link, but I'm in control. I'm going to pull the car over. When I give the signal, run." I ordered.

"Kayla?" Glen asked in surprise. I nodded. I eased off on the accelerator and eased the car over to the side of the road.

"Ready?" I asked, unlocking the doors. I saw Haley nodding in my rear view mirror. "Go!" I screamed.

Glen thrust over the door, grabbing Haley and yanking her out. I reached into the backseat and pulled my limp body outside. It's disturbing, carrying yourself. I lay my body on the side of the road and headed back towards the car.

"Where are you going?" Haley asked.

"To take care of Brett." I replied.

"What? How?" Glen asked. I glanced over my shoulder at him.

"Don't worry about it." I said calmly.

I quickly jogged back to the car. Getting into the driver's seat, I pushed the gas petal to the floor and took off down the highway. As soon as I saw an opening, I spun the car around and began going the opposite way: Head on into oncoming traffic. I passed Haley and Glen again.

They must have realized by now what I was doing. I swerved around the cars, horns blared at me. I wasn't going to hit them. I was looking for something bigger. My opportunity came in the form of a semi, barreling down on me. My timing had to be perfect. A split second before impact. I wasn't sure if I could get out fast enough, but I had to try. You're crazy! You're going to kill both of us! Brett screamed in my head, well his. At least I'll be taking you out with me. I responded.  The horns blared and the driver swerved to miss me. But it was too late. I drove head-on into the semi...
