Chapter 49

Kayla’s POV

There was a brief second of shock as I saw the arrow pierce Sabrina. A brief second when I saw the blood and my world seemed to stop. It was when Steven shouted that I was brought back to reality. My defenses went up and I jumped into leader mode.

"Steven, get Sabrina out of here! Haley, take Becky, Nick, Stephanie and Bridget and get to a car. Alice, Brett, and Kale, you follow. You're the backup. Glen, Janelle, Katelyn, and Josh, we're the cover. Not a feather of an arrow passes through are barrier, understood? Remember the buddy system, people! Safety in numbers!" I ordered.

Everyone jumped into action. Everyone, that is, except Katelyn. She stared at me with dark Hazel eyes and frowned.

"Come on, Katelyn!" I shouted. Katelyn looked at me and smirked.

"No." Haley and Glen froze. Several of the other kids shot nervous glances at each other. "I don't take orders from you." Katelyn continued.

Oh. It was just one of those power struggle things. "Katelyn, we need to get out of here." I hissed. Katelyn shook her head.

"No." She repeated.

Oh boy. Stubbornness, this could take a while, and we didn't have time! I opened my mouth to argue but, to my surprise, Glen jumped to my defense. He strode forward and slapped Katelyn across the face. It didn't look like he slapped her that hard, but Katelyn fell back into the booth. Glen snarled at her in disgust.

"If it were up to me, we would have left you already. We don't have time for your petty little rebellion, so I'm going to make this as quick as possible. Either you come with us, or we leave you here and never look back." Glen said through gritted teeth.

Katelyn looked up at him, anger flashing in her eyes. "Who put her in charge? Ever since she got here, she's been ordering people around like she's the leader! Heck, she isn't even second-in-command! Why should I listen to her?" glen clutched his fists. "She's just trying to protect you!" He shouted. "And who are you? Her body guard?" Katelyn shot back.

Glen opened his mouth to reply, but someone beat him to it. "Just listen to her, Katelyn."

I turned in surprise at the new voice. A black haired boy with yellow eyes that seemed to glow. I recognized him as Josh. When Josh noticed me looking at him, he gave me a, "Don't-worry-I've-got-your-back." Look. Katelyn didn't say anything. She just stared at josh in surprise and...admiration?

"We have to go." I heard Steven say worriedly. I turned and began to walk away.

"Come or stay, it doesn't matter. We're leaving." I said. Everything was set back into motion. I hurried up to Steven, who was cradling Sabrina gently. I winced when I saw the blood.

"I'll drive." I whispered to Steven.

I’ve seen enough driving that I’m pretty sure I knew how now. He looked at me with worry in his ice-blue eyes. I felt a breeze as someone walked up beside me. I turned to see Josh standing next to me.

"She's bad. We'll have to take her to a hospital." He noted. Steven's eyes widened in surprise. "And how are we going to do that?" I asked.

The doctors would surely notice our mutant genes. And there was nothing we hated more than the smell of disinfectant and blood. Josh must have seen the flash of discomfort in my eyes because his features softened slightly.

"We'll think of a plan on the way there. But she needs professional help." He said.

We reached the car and a flung open the driver's door. Josh slid into the passenger seat. Steven sat in the back, holding Sabrina gently.

"I'm trusting you have an idea?" I asked Josh as I started the engine.

He turned to me and smirked. I tore out of the parking lot, the others hot on my heels...er...tires. "OK," Josh began. "Here's the plan..."
