"Are you going to tell me where we are going?" I asked, following Jake out to his car. I'd changed into my black jeans, left my Kurt Cobain shirt on and pulled a leather jacket on over it. I was definitely interested in where Jake was taking us for dinner, but I didn't think he would let me in on where. He usually kept this kind of stuff to himself in order to surprise me, and it worked every time.
It was slightly cold outside, a chill in the light wind but it wasn't raining so I was definitely happy.
I pulled myself up into Jake's car as he started it up, still waiting for his response. I put my seatbelt on as he pulled out, before I began fiddling with the stereo in his car.
"I'm taking that as a no," I mumbled, changing the input to CD and enjoying the Coldplay album that he had in the stereo.
"If I told you, it wouldn't be half as fun to see the huge smile on your face," he laughed, looking over to me quickly before he focused on the road again.
It suddenly didn't matter to me that he had been distant and cold for the past two days, he was back to normal now and I wanted to hold onto this time we had. I didn't know how long it would take him to slip back into emotionless Jake, and I couldn't decide if I would be able to survive it again.
We drove for nearly an hour, out into the middle of nowhere, before Jake turned right suddenly. He drove us along a random dirt road, my eyebrows pulling together in confusion. I didn't think there would be any restaurants or pubs out in the middle of nowhere, so I was sceptical to how we would be eating dinner out here.
Jake turned right again, driving through a set of open gates and onto another, smaller dirt road. On either side of us was grass, most likely farmlands. Jake pulled off the dirt road, parking the car on the grass and out of the way. It wasn't like anyone was going to drive down this road though; we were in the middle of nowhere.
"Are you planning on killing me?" I asked, knowing that I definitely watched too much TV.
"No, I'm planning on having a picnic with you," he laughed, taking his seatbelt off and climbing out of the car. I did the same, stumbling out of the car as he opened the boot. I walked around the side of the car and watched as he pulled out a blanket, which he handed to me, a basket and another blanket.
"In case we get cold," he explained, noticing my frown at the second blanket. He closed the boot of the car and I couldn't help but feel like my heart was going to burst out of my rib cage. This was one of the most cutest, and dorkiest, thinks anyone had ever done for me.
I knew Jake was waiting for me to say something, but I was completely speechless. My stomach was turning over with the feeling of butterflies and my heart was going crazy.
Jake laid out the blanket he had in his hands, before setting the basket down and kneeling next to it. He opened the basket, fishing out sandwiches, cut up fruit, a bottle of wine, two plastic cups and two doughnuts. There was no cheese, crackers or grapes like a traditional picnic. This was Jake's own version, and it was so adorable.
He looked up to me after he was finished unpacking the basket, his eyebrows pulling together.
"Are you okay?" he asked, standing up and moving closer to me. We were centimetres apart, yet I could still feel the heat from his body. My breathing hitched, the realisation of how close he was affecting me. My thighs yearned to be wrapped around him, as an aching feeling settled in a deep, deep place inside my stomach.
"Why did you do this?" I whispered, unable to trust my voice. I knew it would betray me, expose how I truly felt about him. I looked away from his eyes, down to the picnic blanket where our food was set out.
