"She likes him. He likes her. Everyone knows. Except them."
Coming back after break, I was happy. I was ecstatic to be back especially now that Mary wasn’t going to be coming back. My birthday was at the end of the week. I was excited to be turning nineteen, but sad because I didn’t have my family with me.
My birthdays were celebrated with my dad, my sister, and me. My mother always had a business trip that fell on my birthday, so it was just dad, my sister and I. I would usually get two or three presents with the library all decorated with streamers. And of course I would get a cake, ice cream cake to be specific!
But this year, my birthday was Alli and I. Alli was the only one who remembered. Joey and Steve didn’t remember… but that was okay. I didn’t expect them too. Alli got me a guitar pick made out of a quarter, and a huge batman cup for tea or soup. That made my day. I also got an email saying there was a package for me at the package center. I eagerly went to get the package.
When getting there I saw a bouquet of flowers built up like a cake with candles and a teddy bear that held a present that said “Happy Birthday.” It was from my mom. I couldn’t hide my smile. In fact, I think I smiled for most of the rest of the day. I definitely would write in my new journal about today.
Though, happiness never lasts as everyone knows. That night, Alli broke the news to me that she was leaving. Only a week had passed and everything came crashing down with one sentence. You’re probably saying “overdramatic much?” but to me it was the end. My only friend left was leaving. I was going to have this dorm room to myself. And y’all are thinking, “Why is she complaining about having a dorm room to herself? I would kill for that!” But what you don’t know is that I can’t be on my own for too long. I can’t stand being alone. Ironic for someone who had the label of a loner for the past four years. But seriously, I need human interaction or I get stuck in my head, and it’s painful.
Alli left that weekend. I spent a week trying to find a new roommate. No luck. I tried making friends in my classes. No luck, except for one. Clara. She was a tough chick, and opinionated, but a good friend. We became friends because we were drawing the same still life for the first project for our drawing class.
We ate dinner together, and I met other people through her. There was Bo, who was also in our drawing class. She had black hair and was very in touch with her emotions. There was Mario, who was filled with personality and life with his expressions and his long curly brown hair. And finally, Christian, who was wise, grounded, and the most brilliant friend one could ever have.
I met Christian when Clara and Bo took me to the soccer field behind the dorms to play soccer. For the first time since Alli left, I had fun and was happy. Soccer was every Wednesday. Wednesday was my favorite day of the week because it was the day I could let out all my anger by kicking the soccer ball as hard as I could. Not that I had much anger at that point, but it was a huge stress reliever.
But sadly by the middle of the third week, I got an email stating I had to move out of my dorm room by Sunday. The email contained a list of all available rooms in the building. Luckily there was one right above me. 328. I grabbed my keycard, and went upstairs and knocked on the door. A short Asian girl opened the door and I explained my situation.
“Oh, come in. My name is Carla,” she smiled.
“I’m Vanna. So you really wouldn’t mind having a new roommate?” I asked a bit apprehensively.
