Asa took my hand and he squeezed it gently, in a comforting way. I smiled gratefully at him.

As we walked across the car park, over to the clinic, my heart was racing. I just hoped everything went okay.

Asa opened the door for me, I walked through and looked around at my unfamiliar surroundings. I may get used to this I thought, as this is a place I'd be visiting regularly throughout my pregnancy. I soon found the reception desk, and with Asa's hand in mine, we made our way over. The receptionist was a friendly looking middle-aged woman, with greyish hair and glasses. She looked really nice, which comforted me a bit.

"Hello love," she said to me, going over to her computer ready to type up my details.

"Hello, uh, I'm here for my prenatal visit," I looked at Asa a little and said, "My name's Gemma Wilson."

The receptionist typed my name into the computer, "ah, I can see this is your first time here. Do you need me to explain anything?"

I shook my head. "Well if you ever have any questions you need answered you can come to me or any other of the staff here,' She handed me quite a thick book, titled Looking after your Unborn Baby. "That's if you don't find the answer in this book first.. It's very informative, I'd really recommend it to you."

"Thank you!" I flicked through the book, planning to start on this tonight. She nodded, smiling.

"Take a seat, your sonographer (is that what their even called? i don't know) will be with you in a few minutes."

I nodded and went over to the waiting area, twiddling my thumbs. Asa took the book from me and he read through it.

"Oh look, it says here you can have sex during pregnancy!"

"Is that all you ever think about? Give it here," I took the book from him and put it in my bag, tutting a little. Boys!

10 minutes passed very quickly, and before I knew it my name was called. "Gemma Wilson?"

I got up quickly and took Asa's hand, pulling him up as well. I bit my lip nervously and made my way into a dimly lit room, with one of those bed things and a screen beside it.

"Hello Gemma, and.." she looked at Asa expectantly.

"Asa," he held his hand out to her and they shook.

"I'm Dr Jackson, I'll be your sonographer for the next couple of months. I was informed you also get to hear your baby's heart beat today, am I right in saying that?"

I nodded and looked around the room, "you are. I'm a bit nervous actually."

"Oh don't you worry, I'm guessing your a first time mom? Everyone's like that at the start, there's nothing to be worried about. The process only takes around 20 minutes. Do you need me to explain anything?"

I shook my head. Dr Jackson nodded, and gestured to the bed. "Could you lay here please and pull your shirt up just enough so your tummy is showing?"

I did as I was told, blushing a little at the exposed pudge on my stomach. Asa took my hand and sat in the chair beside me, smiling at me reassuringly.

"You'll be fine babe, I'm right here," he mouthed. I smiled and rubbed my thumb along his hand gently.

"Okay Gemma, I'm just going to apply some gel on your stomach. This will be a little cold," Dr Jackson said, putting on those surgical gloves. I nodded, jumping a little in shock at how cold that jelly was.

When all the gel was on, she got the stick and started moving it around my tummy. I looked at the screen expectantly. She pointed to a tiny little blob.

"This here.. Is your baby," she smiled and looked at me. I looked at Asa, tears welling in my eyes. I could see some in his own as well.

"This is amazing," he whispered, kissing my hand gently. I smiled, a couple of happy tears rolling down my cheek.

"Now for the heartbeat," she turned another machine on, tiny little thumps coming from it. I covered my mouth. This was the proof that the tiny little person inside me was actually alive and real.

"Wait.." Dr Jackson said, "listen carefully.."

Oh god, "what is it?" I gulped, expecting the worst.

"I'm picking up two heartbeats..."
