:O CHAPTER 33!

OMG!

Ahhh...it feels good to have a direction to go in--or to write in ;)

P.S. when I'm done writing Whispers I'll probably delete all the fluff chapters... Just a head's up.

Laehal couldn't speak. His mouth hung open, but no sound had found its way out quite yet.

Teriaj, on the other hand, seemed quite content with himself. He had, after all, done a good job with his storytelling. He was satisfied with Laehal's response, though he knew it was mostly because of how sudden all of this information was.

"I-I-I..."

"You...?" Teriaj prompted.

"I have to...replace the Spinner?"

"Not just you, there are others that will be going there also. Five others, to be exact."

"Why is all of this so sudden?"

"The knowledge of the Web of Fate has dwindled because heirs of the Guild have not been passing down the stories. Of course, it's hard when the heirs have not been able to tell their family because they get taken away too fast, and then they can't return to Earth before the next heir is taken up. The Watchers are the only ones who can pass on the story because they have access to Earth."

Laehal perked up and stared at Teriaj.

"What? Is there something on my face?"

"You're a Watcher."

The statement was sudden, but Teriaj knew Laehal would catch on eventually. He grinned.

"Took you long enough."

Laehal smiled. "Are you my Watcher?"

"If I wasn't, I'd be blending in, trying not to be seen by some regular soul. I'm lucky I got someone with an interesting path."

Laehal was suddenly confused. "If it's fate, then why can I choose to fulfil my destiny or not?"

"You always have a choice. An heir's path is made with two outcomes--both are destinies. At a certain point, the heir's soul comes face to face with a major choice: to take up their place in the Guild, or to live among the mortals. The heir's Watcher must tell the heir that choosing the second outcome will harm the Web of Fate, but some heirs aren't up to the challenge and responsibility. Usually, the Cutter's heirs are the most reluctant, because over the years they've been gaining feeling back. They don't want to end lives. But they choose the Guild over mortal life because if they didn't, Earth would be overrun, and the Web would grow too big. It would be catastrophic."

Laehal cringed slightly. "That's kind of a lot of pressure on them."

Teriaj frowned. "Yes, it is, but the blood of Kóptis runs in their veins. Her blood connects her soul to theirs, and they make the choice together."

"But I thought Kóptis and the rest of the Guild were dead?"

Teriaj laughed. "More like retired. Immortals are called immortals for a reason, Laehal, and gods cannot die."

"So they're still connected?"

Teriaj nodded. "And you're still connected to Klóstis. If you really need her help to decide, she will help you."

"I want to do it," Laehal said, standing up straighter. "I want to be a Spinner. I want to carry on Klóstis' blood."

Teriaj then stopped mid-breath. "Wait. How old are you?"

"14."

"And you don't have any kids, correct?"

"No...," Laehal said slowly. He didn't like where this was going.

"And your parents are dead, correct?"

"Yes..."

"You don't have any siblings?"

"No..."

"You can't. You can't go up yet. If you go up, you can't come down, and then your bloodline stops. You can't."

"But can't we just put my blood into a string like they did in the very beginning? Surely Paratiritis could show you or another Watcher how. I can't abandon my destiny for that long! What if the others are already up there? What if they're waiting for me?"

Teriaj thought for a while. "I don't know, Laehal. And I don't know how to find out either. Maybe we can contact Klóstis and Paratiritís for help? This has never happened before."

"I'm the youngest recruitment so far?"

"Yes. The others all have children."

Laehal stood confidently. "We have to find a way. The Web needs me."
