He woke up, a strange buzzing feeling in his bones as he stared at the roof. He turned onto his side, reading 8:07 on the clock on his nightstand. On the other side of him was his wife, Alexandria, who was still sleeping.
He stretched, then pushed the covers off of himself in such a way that he didn't disturb Alexandria's slumber. There was a feeling in the air that something special would happen that day. He rose from the bed and walked across the light blue shag carpet to the door, where he exited the room. Down the white hall that was littered with pictures in frames were three doors: the first on the right was a bathroom, and the two doors farther down and across from each other were the bedrooms of his three children.
He walked down the hall all the way to the end, where he took a turn right to go down a flight of stairs that landed him before the front door. He could see that it was a nice day outside. There were rays of sunshine that were shining on the floor before him, beckoning him to go outside. It was as if his legs were moving forward by themselves, his hands grabbing and turning the knob on the door of their own accord.
He could feel a light breeze stroking his cheek, tousling his hair back and forth. There was a calm sense in the air.
Tiny yellow flowers littered the lawn. The branches of the willow tree that stood tall at the right corner of the house swayed slightly. Across the street was a group of birds that were flying back and forth. It looked as if they were waves, staying in a close formation the whole time they rose and descended in the sky.
The sun was hidden behind a few fluffy grey clouds, but the light still made it to the ground. It was a warm day, but not too warm.
The birds flew around him, and once his gaze was unblocked he could see Teriaj standing in the road. He smiled.
I'm ready for you, Laehal. You're ready.
"But my kids, my wife!"
They will be fine.
Laehal took to Teriaj.
"You're ready. You can Spin the souls. You've been practicing all your life."
You'll be fine.
Laehal looked back at his house, and then nodded. "Okay. I'll go."
The wind picked up, blowing leaves around Laehal. They went around and around, until he couldn't see a thing. Suddenly, the leaves fell, and he was in a dark cave that seemed to be lit by candles, but there were none around.
A tall woman with long green hair stood before him with a grin on her face.
"Mother Nature?"
She nodded. "It is nice to see you, Laehal."
"Yeah, uh, you too," Laehal said as his gaze drifted to the people behind her. One woman wielded a pair of shear-like scissors, others sat by spinning wheels, others were just standing.
One man stood beside Mother Nature, looking old and frail.
"This is the Spinner you are replacing,"
"Come with me. I want to show you your Spinning Wheel." The man turned around and walked back to the others. Laehal went to follow, but froze in awe when he saw the Web of Fate.
It was a large web of glowing strings, some golden, some tied together, with some holes where the Cutter must have removed the souls.
"Amazing, isn't it?"
Laehal nodded.
The man patted him on the back. "You'll do great things."
