Laehal was nervous when he arrived at his—well, Shayel's—house. The lights were still on and it was around midnight, he guessed. What could be keeping Shayel up so late?

When he opened the door he saw that the house had been trashed.

"M—Shayel...?" Laehal called through the house.

There was very suddenly a loud bumping sound coming from upstairs. Shayel appeared, stomping down the stairs in a red fury.

"Where have you been," Shayel screamed at him. "I've been worried sick since I got home."

"I-I," Laehal stuttered. He didn't know what to say. He had a feeling 'some leaves led me to my old house where I had some weird visions, then I rode a stump to this guy's house who told me you were crazy' would set off a nerve.

"You're filthy! Get cleaned up and go to bed. We'll carry this conversation on in the morning."

Laehal stalked up the stairs. He dropped his bag off in his room—which was also trashed—and then went to the bathroom to have a shower. He had noticed he was quite dirty when he glanced in the mirror; dust mixed with sweat, and dirt and a few scrapes from riding the stump.

He also noticed the bathroom was trashed.

What was she doing in here while I was away? Having a tantrum?

As he washed away the dirt, he thought about what Sever had told him. He was no longer safe in the house he had grown up in. Actually, he never had been.

Though Shayel had been a caring mother, she had had her days when Laehal didn't listen. He knew that when she was mad she would throw things around. He had been beaned in the head by a can of soup once. The one day when he had wandered down the road when she was reading, he had gotten a good smack and speech from her. Don't wander off on your own, and always be back when you are supposed to. Laehal didn't understand her neediness then, but now he did.

She was worried she'd lose him, and then all her hard work would be wasted.

She had scared him into obedience.

After getting washed up, he dried off and got into his pjs. Shayel must have trashed the whole house, because everywhere he looked things were overturned.

He turned off his light and got into bed, extremely nervous about what tomorrow would bring.

Before he fell asleep, he rehearsed what he would tell her when she asked where he had been.

"Get up. Now, Laehal. Tell me now where the hell you were last night."

"I was out," Laehal mumbled sleepily.

Shayel had burst into his room and slapped him awake.

"Out where, you—" Shayel uttered some profanities "—idiot!"

"I went out with some friends."

"And you didn't tell me? What kind of a mother am I if you don't tell me these things!" Shayel picked up book and threw it across the room. Laehal was surprised there was something she hadn't already trashed.

"What kind of a mother are you that your child comes home to a trashed house and gets yelled at? What kind of a mother are you that raises your hand to her child before he can explain himself? Obviously not a good one."

That earned Laehal a punch.

"Don't you DARE speak to your mother that way!"

"You, are not my mother."

Laehal ducked under Shayel's arm and ran down the stairs. He ran out of the house and down the street towards the school. He knew it wouldn't be open but he had to get away from her. He had to see Sever again. Yes, Sever would be able to hide him.

But when he got to the school, there was a certain red-haired person there, who seemed to be waiting for him.
