In the morning the car was found by an elderly couple who were smart thinkers; they weren't driving the night before.

They got out of their car to search for survivors, but none could be seen. The man swallowed sympathetically and then phoned the ambulance.

It took a few minutes for it to arrive, because the crash had happened about 45 minutes from the nearest town. But the elderly couple stood their ground, the woman fighting the urge to cry. The man held her hand as she tried to look away from the dead people inside. The ambulance took them away, the car was towed to the dump, the couple went home, and an officer was sent to deliver the news to the dead couple's family.

There were three quick raps on the door. Tip-tip-tip. A tired baby-sitter woke up and scrambled to get to the door. She opened it to see officer Daerisk standing awkwardly on the step.

"Come in officer," she greeted him. "What brings you here?" She led him to the kitchen where she put on a pot of coffee. "Would you like a cup?"

"No, thank you. But I'm afraid I bring bad news. You see, Mr. and Mrs. Kindley were killed last night in a car accident. We tried to tell everyone to stay indoors, but Mr. Kindley was too anxious to keep his promise with their son, I suppose."

The baby-sitter was shocked. She had told them that she could stay as long as they were away. But now, she might need to stay forever...

"Where is their son?"

"He's still sleeping...he has no school today...," she trailed off as the coffee maker beeped at her. 'I'm ready I'm ready,' it said.

She just looked blindly in it's direction, not seeing the coffee maker but instead one little drop of condensation that was on the pot. The coffee inside meant nothing to her at the moment.

"Er, Shayel, your coffee is ready."

Shayel shook her head and turned to look at the officer. "Is it? Hmm...I must have missed the beep...."

'Im ready I'm ready!'

"Er, I think I'll be going now. Be sure to, er, tell Laehal about the...accident."

"Of course," Shayel said absentmindedly.

She heard the boy's footsteps slowly dragging down the stars, thump...thump-puff...thump...thump-puff.

The boy appeared at the foot of the stairs, holding his stuffed bear in one hand and wiping his eyes with the other.

"Good morning, Laehal."

"Morning Shayel," he yawned.

"Did you have a good sleep?"

"Yeaaaaah, and so did Blueny."

'Im ready I'm ready I'm ready!'

"Coffee," said Laehal at her, wondering why she seemed to be ignoring it.

"Yes..."

'Im ready!'

She pressed a button and then took the pot out, setting it on the counter so she could dig out a mug. The dark substance was poured into the red 'Best Mom' mug and Shayel drank from it tiredly.
