We reached the top of a roof where Evie was stood, silently watching over a crowd of people who were gathered around a monument. Jacob slowly crept up on her, pounced, and she swivelled around, more than ready to slice our throats out with her cane sword.
"Oh, for goodness sake!" She exclaimed, trying to keep her voice down. "What the hell are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with Miss Attaway?" She then noticed me. "And, Carina. You should be with Alec or with Mabel." Her hands found her hips.
"We wanted to see you, dear sister."
"Rubbish. You have work to do."
"So, the 'hints' you found in the Kenway Mansion have lead...to the monument?" Evie sighed at the sound of Jacob's voice.
"What a wonderful use of your time. Following me around, asking obvious questions." She muttered sarcastically.
"Well, since Henry isn't here, I thought you might enjoy mine and Carina's company." He looped his arm around me and rested his hand on my shoulder. I quickly pushed him away, catching him before he could fall from the roof.
"I don't require any company. And Mr Green is following up on some leads of his own." I patted Jacob's elbow.
"She is right, Jacob. We should go and speak to Miss Attaway." He placed a hand to my stomach to stop me. He then scooted closer to Evie with a devilish smirk. Oh, God...
" 'Oh, yes, Mr Green. That's a fascinating idea.' 'Oh, please, Mr Green, come and take a look at this book and stand oh-so-close to me, Mr Green.' " I felt laughter rising up. Before it could escape my lips, I turned and shoved my sleeve over my mouth.
"I do not-" She paused. I turned back to face the two of them again and noticed the slight red tint to Evie's cheeks. "Well, perhaps you have nothing better to do, but I am busy protecting the assassins."
"Are you really? What was it father used to say..?
" 'Don't allow personal feelings to compromise the mission.' "
"Precisely. Anyway, we're off. If I find any more wild geese for you to chase, I'll be in touch." He slapped his sister's back before hopping from the roof.
"Sorry, Evie." I mumbled my apology, then followed after the brash, young Frye. "That was not very fair, Jacob." He shrugged while trying to find a carriage to take.
"She would have probably done the same."
"No she would not have." I grunted. "She is incredibly accepting. I want you to stop teasing her." I grabbed his arm so that he could no longer walk away from me. "Alright?" He smiled as if he was going to make a stupid comment, but soon dropped the grin when he saw the serious look on my face. He groaned.
"Fine. I will tease her less. I can't promise to never tease her at all." I narrowed my eyes at him. He raised his arms, as if surrendering. "I promise to tease her less." He pulled a face at me, sticking out his tongue and crossing his eyes. I giggled, despite trying to stifle it. "You laughed! So now you aren't allowed to be cross with me anymore."
"Shut up and find a carriage."
~~
Jacob spotted a rather extravagant carriage. Beside it, a lady with pale brown, curly hair up in a loose bun stood in her purple gown. She looked dressed up for something, but clearly was not waiting for anything or anyone. She simply stared off into the distance, delicately brushing the detail on the side of her carriage door with two fingers.
"Miss Attaway?" Jacob greeted her. She jumped and turned.
"Yes, may I--" She spotted Jacob's weapons, then glanced over at me with the same, judgemental look. "Oh, splendid, you're here to murder me."
