Jacob and Evie escorted me to the harbour in a carriage. Jacob gripped tightly to my hand the whole way. My hair had been styled by Evie into a plait crown just like hers and I wore my blue and black dress. My heels clicked on the carriage floor as my nerves set in. The previous evening, Evie spent all of her time trying to teach me how to speak with a posher accent. With a great amount of struggle, I finally managed to speak a few sentences. I also spent the whole time in the carriage practicing as well.
"This is our stop." Jacob muttered. "And there's the ship you have to get on. And there is Martin." A tall man with dark hair, strong stubble on a square jaw and a beautiful pair of soft, blue eyes. I cleared my throat as the door opened.
"Time to meet the man I am going to be spending a number of weeks with." I said, trying my best to keep my proper accent. I clutched onto the small purse which held my coins and a pair of gloves. Henry held the door open for me and helped me out with his hand. I took his hand and stepped out. Martin looked towards me with a wide smile.
"Remember, Carina. We cannot do anything about Starrick without those funds. Do not leave France until you have the money secured." Henry reminded me.
"Yes, Mr Green, I know."
"I don't think I will ever get used to that accent." Jacob chimed. "I give you permission to use any means necessary to achieve your goal - even if that means making him believe you two are lovers. Seduction is a powerful weapon, and you have the skills to pull it off." He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I will try to avoid that. Even if I have to, I will go no further than kissing. Nothing more intimate." He chuckled and looped his arms around me. I placed mine around his torso and hugged him tightly. He gently kissed my cheek.
"I will miss you."
"Send me letters. I will write to you often...cousin." I added, remembering the story I was told to play. "And where is my female cousin? I should like to hug her as well." Evie emerged from the carriage and pulled me into a slight hug.
"You be safe, young Carina." I nodded into her shoulder.
"Of course I will be. I trust Martin." I pulled away from her. "And Mr Green. Thank you for looking after me for so long." He smiled.
"Of course, Miss Faraday." He stood hesitantly. I, making the most of the opportunity, hugged Henry.
"I really appreciate all you have done for me, and that is from the real Carina, not posh knickers Carina."
"Phrases like that will get you sent back here." He chuckled. "But thank you, and you are welcome." I pulled back again and turned to face Martin.
"Here I go." My heels clicked on the stone floor. Martin awaited my arrival to him with a great smile. I bowed slightly to him, my curls falling ever so slightly into my face. "Hello, Mr Travert. I am Carina Faraday. Do excuse me, I was just saying goodbye to my cousins and Mr Green." I gave a little smile, speaking to him in French.
