I stepped out of the train in my dress alongside Jacob. He quickly snaked an arm around my waist, leading me towards our carriage and handing the driver our invitations. I took a seat on one of the benches and Jacob sat opposite me. He gave me a wide smile.
"You look stunning." He stated as the horses began to move. I blushed and pinned a small section of my hair behind my ear.
"Thank you. I must say that you also look rather dashing." He plucked up the collar of his shirt a little bit more with a cocky smile.
"Yes. I know."
"Where are we meeting your sister?"
"Just outside of the palace. A few blocks away, give or take." I nodded, noting the slight change in his attitude at the mere mention of Evie. "Damn... I forgot about Freddy..." He knocked on the roof of the carriage and the driver slowed. "Stay here while I fetch Freddy."
"I don't have any weapons. What if someone tries to break in?"
"They are all in the bag under the bench." He jogged out and turned a corner.
After a few moments, Jacob was walking back over, without Freddy. He had the carriage driver pull up just beside an alley so that Freddy could jump in without being seen.
"Good evening, Freddy." I gave him a wide smile as he sat opposite me. "How are you liking your new disguise?"
"Good evening to you as well, Miss Faraday. And it is rather comfortable, though looks may be deceiving." I chuckled.
"Well, it suits you." A gentle pink tint coloured his cheeks at my compliment.
"You look nice." He added.
"Thank you. Evie thought it best that we wore disguises to blend in, which is also why Jacob is in a suit." The realisation that all of us were in disguise sent a thrilling shiver through me. It was as if we had discarded any identity, but not really because we still all looked recognisable. I gestured to Jacob. Freddy scanned over him, then opened his mouth to say something.
"You don't have to give me a compliment, Freddy."
"Thank the Lord." He breathed out. "Where is Miss Frye?" I rolled my eyes.
"She and Jacob are in a bit of an argument right now. We will be picking her up on the way, if that's alright. Only, they can't be in a small space together for more than two seconds without trying to tear each other's throats out." Despite my ranting, I kept a smile on my face.
"Right... Yes, yes. Perfectly alright." He cleared his throat, holding the bearskin closer to him.
I watched out of the window on the way to pick Evie up. Even this late into the evening, children were playing outside. In a few short hours, it would be the next morning, but seemingly the parents of these children, if they had any, weren't concerned with that. When they heard the carriage going past, they waved to it and ran after it. After all, we were in the Gladstone's carriage and would have looked wealthy in our posh outfits and fancy carriage. I waved back to them with a wide smile and the children stopped running, instead turning and laughing with each other before getting back to the game they were playing.
