I wanted to visit Freddy a few days later, but it seemed Evie had beaten me to it. However, she chose to turn up at a crime scene which Freddy was investigating. That scene was the place of another of Jack's murders.
I made my way there myself, creeping behind police officers to get inside the house. There was a certain smell lingering in the air. I couldn't quite pick out what it was, but it was similar to that of the back of a butchers or a slaughterhouse. The thick, metallic stench of blood hit my nose right as I began to walk up the stairs. Already I could hear a slight commotion.
"Monster... You damn monster!" Came a yell. I recognised the voice as Evie's, and heard rushing feet of the other inspectors at the scene. I made my way to the top of the staircase just in time to see an officer confront her.
"Oi! You're not allowed in here!" He swung his truncheon towards her but she dodged it and grabbed the man by the collar.
"Evie! Calm down!" I screamed. She let the man go and the officers faced me. "Yes, I know I'm not meant to be here either, but I just potentially saved your lives. Go. Out. I will deal with her."
"What on Earth is wrong with you?" A voice from behind me directed. I turned to see Freddy and I smiled at him. However, he was infuriated by Evie already, and was in no mood for smiling.
"Who is she? Tell me quickly." She gestured to a bed with a blood-stained sheet over the top of a body. That must have been where the smell was coming from. Freddy groaned.
"Tell you? By what right?!" He scoffed. "I am an officer of the law, I'm not a member of your secret organisation." Her anger boiled over and she clasped her hands around Freddy's neck.
"Listen to me. Jacob knows--" I pulled her arms away.
"No, you listen to me. I cannot cover for you much longer. All the evidence points to your brother, your 'Order', you..." He wiped his brow of the thin layer of sweat which had formed. "You need to deliver the Ripper's head on a spike soon, or I'm afraid there will be nothing to stop my men from arresting you in his stead."
"You will have his head, even if it will cost me mine." I ushered Freddy out of the room so that Evie could investigate.
"She shouldn't be in there. She is not a police officer."
"I know, Freddy, but you have to leave her to it. She will slaughter both of us if we try to stop her. You know how stubborn she is." I chuckled.
"Yes, I suppose... I understand that she is under a lot of stress, rightfully so, but she needs to be less...like her brother."
"Brash." He nodded. "I will talk to her later on. We are close to finding him, Freddy. I'm sure of it."
"What have you found out?"
"He keeps captives in the old hulks. These captives are either left to starve, die from disease, or are hung for Jack's entertainment. We killed the Chief Warder, the man behind all of the hangings in order to save a few innocent lives. Evie also delivered the keys for the cells to the prisoners. Those innocent men didn't deserve to die, and I am certain that they have found their way home to their families. I know what it feels like to have a husband and a son go missing, and I don't want it to happen to others." Freddy wore a look of compassion and sympathy.
"I know. I am sorry that we haven't been able to find them yet, Carina."
"It's alright. We are close. The work you are doing is very helpful. Thank you. I know how awful it must feel to have an open case with practically no leads to ending it all." Before he could speak, Evie appeared in the doorway.
"What did you discover?"
"A message for myself and Carina. He is going to lead us right to him, Inspector. We must return to the locations of the Ripper's first crimes."
"Don't let your fury blind you, Miss Frye. I would not lose you too..." Freddy spoke in a fatherly way.
"If I do die, Inspector, I will take the Ripper with me." Evie left the building
"Carina?" I faced him. "Stay safe, and keep Miss Frye safe as well. She will get herself killed if she charges in there with that attitude" I nodded.
"Thank you, Freddy." Without another thought, I wrapped my arms tightly around him. "If I die, my favourite flowers are irises. Bring them to my funeral. Thanks." I let go of him and ran off to find Evie. I could hear Freddy beginning to chuckle just as I left the door.
We first went to the scene of Annie Chapman's murders - near a cemetery in Whitechapel. Upon reaching the site, we noticed a small gathering of officers. Evie tossed a Fear bomb in order to scare them all off. They searched for the source of the bomb, one of the men sprinting away as soon as he possibly could. The others followed suit. This left only two officers at the scene. Another Fear bomb headed their way and those men were much too afraid to stick around for more than a few moments.
We did this at each of the murder sites, receiving messages from Jack at each one. Also, each woman had an assassin ring - they were all Jacob's initiates. Jack's way of getting revenge on Jacob was by killing off his allies. Finally, we pieced together the notes.
"He blames Jacob and the assassins for his mother's death. Only her death is seen as murder in his eyes." Evie stated. "He is doing all of this for revenge."
"At least we know where to find him. He wants us to try to kill him so that he might finish the two of us off himself." I smirked. "He won't get the chance. Let's make Lambeth Asylum his place of rest."
