1888 - Whitechapel
The front door swung open then slammed shut again just as I was serving dinner. I finished up and went to see what was going on.
"You boys eat up. Mother will be back in a minute." I said, earning a sweet smile from Elias, the youngest.
The bedroom door had also been thrown open. I stepped inside to see Jacob sifting through our drawers to find something.
"May I ask what you think you're doing?" I stood with hands on my hips in the doorway. He turned his head just slightly and nodded. I gasped. "Don't you ignore me, Frye. Dinner is ready and you are late home." He then whisked past me and planted a kiss on my cheek. "Jacob!" I yelled. He stopped halfway down the corridor to the front door. "What is going on with you?" I got closer to him and grabbed his hands. "Come and eat with your family."
"I can't."
"And why can't you?" I was angry now. He had been doing this for weeks and giving me cold, blunt answers.
"It's the Ripper." He whispered so that the children wouldn't hear. "He's done it again. Two women at the same time. I have to get back and help with the investigation."
"You are not an inspector. You have to care for your family, but it seems you care more for a profession you don't have." I pulled him to the side. "We are assassins. We have killed people. We have the furthest profession from an inspector or a bobby." He placed his hands on my shoulders.
"Please, Carina. I have to do this."
"No, you do not. You have to eat dinner with your family. You seem to forget that you haven't been doing that for weeks." I sighed. "You may as well not be here. Little Elias has barely seen any of his father this past month because you're off chasing serial killers." I made sure to keep my voice low so that the children wouldn't hear me. They didn't need to know what their father was doing.
"I hope to fix that."
"When?"
"Once the Ripper is caught." I growled and stormed over to the front door.
"Get out."
"What? Carina-"
"No. You don't want to be here so you can get out. Go and do your duty, because I simply don't care anymore." He walked slowly to the door, then reached out to kiss me. He leaned his head down slightly. I moved my head out of the way. "Just leave. You can come back when you're finished with whatever you are doing." He frowned and quickly left. I made my way back to the children with a smile on my face. "That was your father. He said he had something important to take care of."
"More important than our family?" Ethan asked. I hung my head.
"Yes. It seems that way." I then brightened up again. "Well, how is dinner?"
"It's really nice!" Elias chimed. I smiled at him. "Can we have this again tomorrow?"
