Chapter 43 ~ Emily's POV

"Hey Mac, what's up?" I answered the phone to my best friend.

"Can you come over right now?" she asked urgently, "It's about Kennedy..."

"I'm on my way now," I said before hanging up and rushing to get down stairs. I ran into the kitchen, grabbed a breakfast bar, and went to go out the door.

"Emily!" my father called  just before I was about to grab the door knob.

"Yes Dad?" I called and turned around to see him in front of me.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Mackenzie's."

"Did you finish your homework?"

"Yes."

"What time are you coming home?"

"Before dinner."

"Did you finish your chores?"

"Yes."

"Including changing the litter box?"

"Including changing the litter box."

"Ok, well your mother is at work and I just got a call from the office. Call us if you need anything," he said, kissing my head and then going to the garage in the back. I sighed, finally ketting myself out of the house. We went through the same routine every day

I hopped on my green bike and started pedaling to Mackenzie's, dropping my bike on her front lawn and knocking on the front door. She answered quickly, opening the door and letting me inside.

"So what's the news?" I asked her casually, walking up the stairs to her bedroom. She followed behind me.

Once we were sat on her bed, she started to explain, "So, Kennedy slept over last night, and she told me that her and Niall broke up."

"What!?" I almost yelled.

"I know, it's crazy," she said, continuing her story, "She said they broke up because Niall cheated on her  with Tommie."

"That's impossible," I said, brushing it off, "Niall would never do that, that's not like him."

"It seemed pretty legit, she let me listen to the recording he sent her of the, um, noises the made during said event," she said, widening her eyes.

"I still refuse to believe that. For all we know, Tommie could've staged the whole thing," I rationalized and Mackenzie nodded her head in agreement.

"But there's more," Mackenzie said before I tried to speak again. I just waited for whatever came next. "I think she's seeing Derek again."

"No, she can't be!" I defended, "She's been spending all her time with her family."

Mackenzie shot me an are you stupid? look, "Listen to me, while she was sleeping, I had to get up and pee, so when I was on my way to the bathroom, I looked over at her and she turned on her side. Em, her makeup started to come off and there was a huge bruise on her left cheek. And then I noticed her shirt was up a little bit, and I saw smaller bruises on her hips."

"No," I said, shaking my head, "this can't be happening again."

"I didn't want to believe it, Em, I really didnt. But it's the only thing that makes sense! The bruises were in the same places as last time..." she trailed of, massaging her temples with her fingers.

"What do we do?" I asked her.

"Well first we have to be absolutely 100% positive that she's dating Derek, we can't just assume," she explained.
