Chapter 20

"Don't just stand there, tell me what happened, the truth," I demanded, tapping my foot with my arms crossed.

Niall's POV ~ Flashback

"I can't hang out today, my mother wants to go shopping," Kennedy told me in the car.

"Oh my gosh I neeeeed to go shopping!" Cassia said from the front seat.

We got out of the car and Dad drove away. I kissed Kennedy goodbye before she left. She shut her front door behind her and that's when I started walking home.

Once I got settled on the couch with a bag of chips, my phone vibrated with a new text message. I checked it, hoping it would be from Kennedy, but it was from Tommie.

From: Tommie

Are you busy right now? I need to talk to you!

To: Tommie

No, I just got home. What's wrong?

From: Tommie

Can you come over?

She proceeded to tell me her address, which wasn't too far from here. I walked to her house, about ten blocks away. Once I arrived to what I assumed to be Tommie's house, I knocked on the door. Less than a minute later she flung the door open and invited me inside.

"So what happened?" I asked once we were both sat on her couch. She seemed to be home alone.

She began to tear up, "My dad just left us. Like, when we were at school. And my mother... Left this note on the kitchen table." She put her face in her hands. I scooted next to her and put my arm around her and read the note:

Dear Tommie,

Daddy's gone. He won't be back for a while, so I'll be out until later tonight. Don't worry, I'll be back.

Love, Mom

She put her head on my shoulder and let out all of the tears and sorrow she was holding in. All I could really do was rub her back and tell her it was going to be okay.

"Out of all the friends I texted, you were the only one to reply," she said, looking up.

"You're a good friend, Tommie. I'll always be there for you," I said trying to comfort her.

Our eyes were locked, and she was leaning into me. I didn't expect what happened next to happen, but it did. She kissed me. She brought her hand up to me cheek and planted her lips on mine. I sort of melted into her for a moment, enjoying the situation. I snapped back to reality, and stood up off the couch when she tried to use her tongue.

"Tommie we can't do this. I have a girlfriend," I said sternly, looking down at her. She stood up, almost eye level with me but her height was at her disadvantage.

"But you know how I've felt about you! And you were into that kiss as much as I was," she argued.

"I told you from the beginning we weren't going to work out. And you're Kennedy's best friend, how could you?" I almost yelled, "I'm sorry for what happened with your mam and dad, but I should go now." I started walking to the door and she followed close behind.

"Are you going to tell her?!" she asked while I started walking down her porch steps.

"I don't have to because it didn't mean anything! It doesn't matter!" I yelled, my back still to her.

I made my way down the ten blocks and back to my house. I noticed Kennedy's mom's car wasn't in the driveway, so they were still out shopping. I ran into my house and into the nearest bathroom, and proceeded to brush my teeth and rinse with mouth wash.

After my mouth was clean and fresh, I started to feel extremely guilty. I started to contemplate if I should tell her or not. I did busy work; I started my homework, made food, cleaned my room, did more homework, and still felt the same guilt. It was eating me alive, I had to tell her, to wash this guilt out of me. But how do you tell the girl that you love that you kissed her best friend? Her only friend? I couldn't tell her, what if she broke up with me? She's my first girlfriend, and maybe even my last.

I sat in my room, on my bed with nothing to do but fight my inner conflictions.

End Flashback

"So?" Kennedy angrily asked, tapping her foot.

As I remembered that night, it made me realize how much I didn't want to lose her, so just in case, I kissed her. I could feel her melt into me, and quickly recompose herself.

"Niall!" she yelled, stepping back.

"Sorry," I said sheepishly, "that was just incase you broke up with me when I tell you what happened." I explained to her the text message, and going to Tommie's house, and how she kissed me, and everything that happened afterwards. I finished off with the most sincere apology I could think of. She just stood there and listened to me explain, emotionless. Once I finished my story, she was quiet.

"Okay, I forgive you," she finally said, smiling. All of the guilt just washed out of me as she kissed me lightly.

"It will never happen again, I promise," I said as we began to walk to her locker.

"That's the hundredth time you've said that," she said, giggling. I'm glad to know that I've got my girl back.
