Chapter 40 ~ Kennedy's POV

I had been spending a lot of my time with Derek after I made sure Aimee wasn't depressed. I made her take a test and it said she wasn't depressed, which made me very relieved. Now I just had to make Dad take that test, because he was showing symptoms too. I told Aimee to make Dad take it and then text me the results, since Derek invited me to his house. She agreed to do it, and Derek was waiting outside in his car for me.

With all the stress of me missing school, helping Aimee with her leg, and my dad possibly having depression, I neglected to use my phone. I don't know why, but I was just ignoring everyone. I called Niall this morning, but he didn't answer again. I didn't leave a message, thinking it might make me look needy and desperate.

"Ugh take me away from this life," I said as I jumped in Derek's Jeep.

"What's wrong this time?" he asked me.

"My dad is showing symptoms of depression, and I tried to call Niall again today but he didn't answer," I said openly. I was slowly starting to trust Derek again. Ok, maybe not so slowly.

"I'm sure your dad is fine," he said, looking into my eyes, "and you know we're like 8 hours behind Ireland, he's probably sleeping or busy."

"Thank you," I smiled. We drove off to his house, probably just to hang out again. Derek really had changed, he was more fun now. We spent most of our time playing games, watching movies, or baking with his mom. I've learned his dad backed out when he found out his mom was pregnant, for some reason. Usually when you're married, you want to have a child.

"Hey Mom," Derek called throughout the house.

"Hi hon, is Kennedy here too?" she asked from the kitchen.

"Yes, she is!" I called out and she laughed. As Derek and I got settled on the couch, we decided to watch Arrested Development on his Netflix that he had on the wii. I'm sorry, but I think that's the coolest thing, like ever. Brenda brought in some brownies and milk for us to snack on as the show began.

"Jeez, Brenda, you're going to make me fat! I need to stop coming here," I said as I picked up a brownie. Brenda just laughed.

"You have to come back, I can't eat all of this by myself!" Derek joked. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders (platonically) and I cuddled into his side (platonically). We started laughing at the show, and Brenda said she had to leave for work. She promised not to be gone too long and then she was out the door. We didn't mind being home alone, he lived in a safe neighborhood.

After we watched about 10 episodes and finished the tray of brownies, we decided to play games. We played Trouble, Monopoly, Crazy 8's, Sorry, Scrabble, almost every board game he had in his house. He even dug up Hungry Hungry Hippo's. After about two hours of trying to occupy our time with games, Derek suggested an all time favorite game.

"How 'bout Truth or Dare?" he asked. I agreed, I mean, there was nothing to do.

"Ok, Derek, Truth or Dare," I said to him.

"Hmm, dare," he said, getting excited.

"I dare you to run 3 laps around your house right now," I said, pointing to the door, "Starting now! Go!" Without thinking he got up and sprinted out the door as I started to time him. He ran back in the door and collapsed on the couch, panting and sweaty.

"What's my time?" he asked after catching his breath.

"6:58, good job!" I said high fiving him. He could barely move. I got up and went to the kitchen to get him a glass of water and a wet towel.

"Truth or Dare?" he asked from the couch.

"Truth," I said, entering the den from the kitchen.

After he took a big sip of water and I put the towel on his head, he thought of a good truth, "If you were single, would you maybe possibly consider dating me again?" He looked at me with pleading eyes.
