Chapter 38

I woke up early this morning, knowing that I needed time to get ready for our outting. I showered, following my normal routine. I straightened my hair, threw on some makeup, and put on some black shorts and a floral top. I checked the time, 11:56. Perfect. Derek should be here any minute. I grabbed my phone and headed down stairs to grab something to eat. I ate a sandwich before I heard a knock at the door. I pranced over to answer it, to see Derek standing there, his blue eyes looking me up and down. I really had a thing for blue eyes.

"Ready to go?" he asked, holding out his hand. I took it and followed him to his Jeep.

"So, where are we going?" I asked him, looking out the window.

"Well I'm not going to be that stupid romantic and say 'It's a surprise!' because, as we both know, this isn't a date," he informed me. I liked the words that left his mouth, he was right, this wasn't a date, and I appreciated that he wasn't trying ti seduce me. "So, I'm going to tell you. We're going to do the lame tourist things that everyone hates doing, but I have a plan to make them fun."

"How do you make tourist-y things fun?" I asked, smiling at him.

"Ok, ok, that's the surprise," he laughed with me. We arrived at Sacramento City Hall and began our excursions throughout the town.

"Oh my gosh, that was too close," I said laughing as we got in the Jeep and sped off.

"That guy looked so pissed!" Derek said, still chuckling. We were in an elevator and we pushed all the buttons before we got out, making this 30 years old man have to go through all the floors until he reached his. He almost ran out after us.

As we became silent again, we could hear the birds singing and the bugs chirping. "I had a lot of fun today, Derek," I said, breaking the silence.

"Me too, I've missed this," he said, smliing at me. "You know I'm sorry, and I have changed. I can't say it enough," his smile had vanished into a serious expression.

"I know," I said, my voice almost at a whisper.

"I've missed you," he admitted, grabbing my hand over the divider. I let him intertwine his fingers with mine. There was a long silence as we rode back home. The sun was setting as we started getting closer to our homes.

I noticed his features, his wavy black hair, muscular body and blue eyes I could stare into forever. He looked so innocent, the way he smiled at me made me forget all about our past. I didn't look away or blush when he noticed me staring, he just smiled at me. We enjoyed the silence, something we had always had in common.

"Do you want to come over and watch a movie?" he asked sweetly.

"Sure, I don't have to be home until 9:00," I informed him. His face lit up when I agreed to go to his house with him.

"Are you going to school on Monday?" he asked me.

"I don't think so, but I'm going to be here a while," I said, remembering my life back in Mullingar. This is why I didn't want to move, now I'm juggling two lives.

We arrived at his familiar house, a sight that I hate to admit, I missed. He opened the door for me, the scent filling my nose. He walked me over to his living room, and before I sat down, I was gretted by his mother, Brenda.

"Kennedy! I haven't seen you in ages!" she said, pulling me in for a hug. Derek looked like his mom, they shared the hair and eyes, and she was super model skinny.

"Hey Brenda, it's nice to see you," I greeted her. Brenda always treated me like the daughter she alwayd wanted but never had. Derek was an only child.

"I'm making cookies, would you two like some?" she offered.

"Of course! I've missed your cooking," I admitted. Derek followed behind me into the kitchen and poured us two glasses of milk. We feasted on the chocolate chip cookies, laughing and catching up. His mom left to go run errands as Derek and I were still re-discovering the things we had in common. It seemed as if I could talk to him for hours on end.

"Maybe we should start a movie, yeah?" he offered, taking my empty glass and putting it in the sink.

"Oh, yeah," I laughed, "What do you want to watch?"

"Let's watch a funny movie," he offered, looking at his selection of DVD's, "Let's watch Anchorman!"

"Yes! I love Will Ferrel!" I agreed, plopping down on the couch. After he put the DVD in, he sat next to me on the couch. He didn't put his arm around me, he didn't grab my hand, he didn't do anything romantic. Maybe he actually had changed.

Once the movie finished, I had found myself snuggled into his side. I looked up at him, and he looked down at me. He played with the ends of my hair as the credits rolled.

"We should get you home," he said, getting up and off of the couch quickly.

"What's with the haste?" I asked, still sitting on the couch.

"I don't want you to break curfew," he said, taking my hand and helping me up. We took our time to walk to his car. I looked at the clock, and it was 8:00.

"Derek, we have an hour, and I live 10 minutes from here, why are you trying to get rid of me so quickly?" I asked, slightly offended.

He put his head down, not looking at me. He sighed before answering, "If I had looked at you any longer, with the position we were in, I would've kissed you, and you have a boyfriend."

I blushed at his answer, "Ok, drive me home Mr. Hormonal." He laughed at my nickname and started the car.

We arrived at my house, and sat in silence for a while until I spoke up, "Thank you for today. I had a lot of fun."

"Thank you, for going out with me," he said, "I mean like, going out to town with me, not like that, I just--" I cut him off.

"I know what you mean, Derek," I laughed at him fumbling over his words. He sent me a simple smile as I got out of the car. I walked over to his side, his window already rolled down. I looked at him for a while before placing a light kiss on his cheek.

He blushed, "Good night, Kennedy."

"Good night," I replied before walking to my front door. I felt his eyes on the back of my head, and sent him a smile and a wave before I walked inside. I walked up to my room, full from the large amount of cookies we ate. Once I plopped myself on my bed, I looked at my phone. I had calls from Niall, and a couple of messages from Mackenzie and Emily.

From: Emily

Where are you? I stopped by your house and your mom said you were out.

From: Mackenzie

You need to call Niall, he won't stop calling me.

I decided not to answer their messages, I didn't want Emily to know I was out with Derek, let alone that I enjoyed it. And I'll call Niall tomorrow, I'm too tired.

That night, I had the best sleep that I've had in a very long time.
