Maya's P.O.V
The next day I grab my phone and am ready to text Riley when I remember that she hates me. Fuck. I decide to man up and deal with it. I throw a blue frilly blouse my mom bought me when I was 12 and some white jeans. I put my North Face jacket on and zip it up all the way so you don't see the little blouse. It's strange how it still fits me. It makes sense though since I barely fit into Hollister clothes. I walk out of my bedroom and my mom is standing at the kitchen counter sipping hot coffee. "Where are you going Maya? This early?" I shrug and say "Places." My mom nods and I pour myself some coffee. I usually spend weekend mornings scalding my throat with coffee and sleeping in. The black coffee tastes rich and I down the whole mug in a few sips. "I'm just gonna go out okay? Uh Riley's place?" She nods and I grab my keys and leave.
Once I get there I lightly tap on the bay window. She usually is there in a matter of seconds, but this time there's no sign of her. Time to go old school, I think as I stomp to the front door. I knock as loudly as I can on the door. Topanga opens it with a big smile on her face. "Maya! Riley doesn't really want to talk right now." Oh shit this is stupid as hell. Of course she wants to talk to me. "Topanga please? It's quite urgent." She sighs and let's me in. Cory and Auggie are playing snakes and ladders in the living room. Topanga goes back to furiously typing on her MacBook with a mug of tea. Damn, now this is the type of home I want to live in. I trudge up to Riley bedroom and attempt to open it. It's locked. "Oh fuck." I then remember that her parents always left a key on the top of the door frame when she was younger so they could reach her at all times. If I could reach it... I try jumping. "Oh my GOD" I exclaim after I fall each time. I walk into the bathroom and take the stool Auggie used when he was smaller. I stand on it and finally I can reach the damn key. "Goddamnit." I murmur as I slide it into the key hole. It clicks open and I sneak into the room. Riley is writing something in a book on the bay window. "What are you doing here Maya?" She says as she sighs. "I never hated you. I- love you." Her face softens and she says "But Maya- I can't love you like that. I love you. As a friend." I try hard to accept that. I pull her into a hug and we're both crying by the time we pull away. "We can't keep doing this." Riley says through tears. "Right." I say, laughing while crying at the same time.
