Shock Of A Century

Riley's P.O.V
I lounge on the couch with a fuzzy Sesame Street blanket over my body. I feel broken. I throw some popcorn into my mouth and turn the TV on to Pretty Little Liars, my forever favorite show. Lucas left and Maya is gone. Maya's mom, Katy Hart is here and talking to my mom about trying to throw away all the alcohol in her house or something.

"Katy, so tell me, how's your love life going?" My mom asks Katy.

"Oh, you mean with the alcohol? Terrible." Katy sips her coffee and rubs her eyes. She takes a pill for a headache I assume and looks at my mom.

"No, you know who I'm talking about."

"Um, no I don't Topanga." Topanga excitedly flashes a smile and looks like a teenager again, not that I've ever actually seen her as a teen, just from seeing pictures.

"With Shawn!" Katy fakes a surprised look and laughs.

"It's pretty decent. We've been going out for awhile now and he's a real sweet guy."

I almost choke on my popcorn. I have to tell Maya. Wait. She did all this to me. I really wanna tell her though. Fuck this, I'm gonna tell Maya. If I never do, I'll regret everything. Better off doing it now than never. I pick up my phone and dial Maya's familiar number. Her face appears on the screen, the snapchat picture I chose for her. On the fourth ring, she picks up.

"Riley?" She says in a familiar but heart breaking voice.

"Maya, I-"

"Riley I'm coming to your house right now I've been such a bitch. I'm sorry."

She hangs up and I walk to my bedroom. I use my finger to comb through my hair that feels like I haven't washed it for days even though I just showered this morning. I wash my face and suddenly feel the urge to wrap my arms around my body protectively. What if this is just a trap to like, kill me? I pray that it isn't and suddenly hear something from the bay window.

"Riley Matthews. I'm here. Oh god, I'm so sorry." She places a big basket in my hands and says "I wasn't myself, I can't believe I even did that to you, you probably won't forgive me, but-"

I place the basket on my bed and start crying.

"Oh my god I'm sorry Riley I shouldn't have come. You want me to go home? I'll go home."

I grab her arm and say "I'm not crying because I don't like it. I'm crying because I'm glad my best friend is back. Maya I know that wasn't you last night. That was, like, the Texas version of you? Just Maya, not Lucas?"

She wraps her arms around me and says in a teasing voice  "Now will you check your presents before I return them you bitch?"

I laugh and take the wrapping paper off of the basket. I pick the first thing up. A tube of scar medicine that is apparently 99.9% effective and doctor approved. "Maya!" I laugh.

"I figured you wouldn't want those scars to remind you of the bitchy Maya, so I got you this. It was like $30, so please use it." We laugh and I take out the next thing. It's the floral maxi dress I wanted that was sooo much money!

"Maya!" I say. "How'd you get this money?!"

Maya smirks and says "I used all my money up on you Riles." That makes me tear up.

"Oh god thank you Maya." Maya was always very protective of her money and she used it all on me? True friends ❤️

I see a matte lipstick, the brand I wanted and the shade. It was expensive also. "Maya!" She just smiles. There's a whole set of Sephora makeup along with the lipstick. Oh my god. The last thing is a jumbo sized Hershey's bar.

"I love you so much Maya and forgive you!" We hug for a long time and walk into the living room. My parents and Katy are chatting.

"Mom?" Maya walks to her mom and Katy says "Maya I'm sorry about last night. I was drunk and, I love you, you know that honey."

Maya cries and hugs her mom. Her mom dabs at her eye gently and stands up. She starts making some more coffee when we hear a knock on the door. My dad runs to the door and opens it quickly.

"SHAWNY!" He cries as he hugs his best friend.

Oh crap. I tug Maya into my bedroom and say "Your mom and Shawn are dating." Her eyes go wide as she says "What the hell? Why are you just telling me this?"

"Because I didn't want you to have a heart attack if him and your mom acted kinda weird or whatever, so in a way I saved you." She shrugs and walks back out. Katy walks to the couch and Shawn takes a deep breath.

My parents look at Maya and me strangely and watch Katy and Shawn. He straightens his shirt and says "Katy, you know I love you and your daughter."

My breathing slows and I clutch Maya's hand. I can feel she's just as nervous as me. What's happening? Maya looks at me and grips my hand. "Promise me no matter what happens we'll take on the world together?"

I smile and say "Always."
