Riley's P.O.V
As soon as the last period of the school day is over, I head to my locker to meet Maya. We usually meet at out lockers and head to the bay window, and on days when we have money, Starbucks. I walk to my locker and wait a few minutes for Maya. That's when I realize that she most likely won't be here. I walk to her locker and open it, because I know her combination. I notice that her bookbag isn't there, so she must've left the school. Why would she leave the school already? She would have told me? I pull out my new iPhone 6s and quickly text Maya.
Me: maya
Me: Maya
Me: MAYA YOU LEFT THE SCHOOL WITHOUT TELLING YOUR BEST FRIEND WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM
Maya: shut up Riley I need to relax and take a break from everything
Me: where you at? you could have told me you were leaving?
Maya: I'm done talking to you
I sigh as I slip my phone into my pocket. Lucas walks to me and I immediately get this feeling in my stomach.
"Did Maya tell you where she was going?" I pretend to be studying my fingernails while he says that. I want to see how he feels when I'm ignoring him.
"Riley? Seriously? Are you seriously trying to ignore me?" He looks at me with an annoyed look on his face and I say, " You left me for my best friend. Why the fuck should I talk to you anymore?" I angrily storm out of the school and I make sure to see Lucas's shocked expression as I leave.

"Maya, where the hell are you?" I can hear my voice sounding annoyed and more annoyed as I make probably the 100th phone call of the day to Maya. It all has been going to voicemails. Knock. I yell at my bedroom door, "WHAT IS IT?" And my mom comes in.
"Riley, sweetie hons, why aren't you with Maya like you always are?" I groan at the nickname my mom has called me ever since I was a baby. "Uh, she's out of town." I lie. Or I don't know if I'm lie, because she could very well be in another country right now. "Oh, honey." She sits down on the edge of my bed and says, "You were just with her this morning when you girls went to school?" I remember when Maya came into our apartment and ate breakfast with me. The we talked at the bay window and I told her all the shit about my breakup with Lucas and we set out on our journey to school. She didn't seem like how she is right now. And then she just leaves the school without even telling anyone where she's going? God, that's just not right. "Yeah, well, you know. Her mom wanted to leave after school was over so that she wouldn't miss today." My mom nods and walks out. As soon as she's out, I whip my phone out of my book bag and dial Maya's mom's number. "Hello?" I hear Ms. Hart's sweet voice answer and she sounds okay, so Maya must be there. "Hey Ms. Hart! Is Maya with you?" I patiently wait for the answer, and it saddens me. "Oh my god, she isn't with you? She was at school though, right? Does she have a boyfriend? Oh god, she never tells me about any of these things, sorry sweetheart." Her voice sounds panicked and rushed, and I quickly tell her about everything, her liking Lucas, leaving the school early, not picking up the phone, and everything. She tells me that if she doesn't come back within 48 hours we should call the police. I worry and worry until I'm so stressed about Maya I can't even sleep.
