I drop an arm over my eyes, I know this conversation is going to be exhausting. "Its not automatic. Some people fight agaisnt the approaching darkness. Others give in only to recover."
I could hear the annoyance in her voice."Do you know someone like that?"
"I do. Your father."
"My what?" I sit up and take in her astounded face. Her amber eyes shocked.
"You're father. I knew him."
"I.. I.... I don't have a dad." Haven averted her gaze to the floor, her voice dropping a few octaves.
"Haven." I could practically feel the pain rolling off her. The thought of not being wanted by your own parents must be awful. I can't let her think this any longer. "Your dad was a Fade. He lost his Ordained, a witch, to an epidemic before you we're born. He slowly descended into darkness. A darkness so deep that not even his two daughters could bring him out. One day he just snapped.
He left his daughters in the care of his wife's friend and took off. He crossed the bridge into Janu, where all the Soles live. From what I've heard, he was hoping to die. He picked a fight with a Sole and was going to be severely punished. But someone interferred. Your mother. She was the soon to be Queen of Janu"
I meet her wide eyes. "To make a long story short, she was his Destined. She managed to save him from the Darkness he had fallen into, and some x amount of years later, they had you." I'd decide against mentioning how he never actually knew about her.
"So I'm a princess?"
"Yes, the Sole Queen's only daughter" Her eyes housed confusion.
"Then how did I get here? Why do you know all this?"
I swallowed. "Even I am not sure how you got here. But your sister did tell me the story."
"My sister?"
"You have two. Neither knew about you until a few years ago when they came back to the invisible world. They, like you, were raised in the visible world. But they blended better in, as they were half witch. Half wizard to be exact."
The look in her eyes almost made me smile, they seemed so excited and curious. There were a million questions lingering behind them. And then what she said next flattened my mood.
"Can I meet them?"
I clenched my jaw. How do I tell her the truth? "I'm afraid not at the moment."
"Why not?"
"I haven't seen either in two years. Don't know where they went or anything." I know they're still alive. As I say this, I can't help but recall the last time I saw Val and Vic.
"Sis are you really gonna just let him die? I know you loved Wyatt. Maybe not like Taj but you did care for him. And he for you. This baby is all that's left." Valerie grabbed Victoria's hand before continuing.
"I'd take him, but Kade says where we're going he won't survive. Its filled with too much pure essence for someone so small."
"I know Val. But I can't take him. Asking Taj to forgive me is one thing but asking him to care for another guy's child is a whole other story."
"My brother wouldn't tell you no." I step into the shed where the sisters we're speaking in whispers. Victoria held a newborn boy with a few strands of dark brown hair.
Vic narrows her eyes at me before rolling them. "Little siblings are always earsdropping."
Val smiles in that way of hers. "I keep telling her Taj wouldn't say no but she doesn't want to make him feel like he has to."
"Plus, when we leave who knows where we'll end up. If in the human world, then more Hunters may come after us. If we stay deep beyond the barrier, he won't be able to breath because of the essence concentration. it's best for him if he's put down." Vic tries to justify but I'm certain she disagrees with what she saying. The haunted pained look in her eyes say so.
I look at Val. There's a similar pained look. No doubt because of what happened to Blake. Before I can contemplate what I'm saying, I speak up. "I'll take him. We'll stay here in Xenia and he'll be fine."
They both look at me shocked. Val recovers first and asks. "Are you sure? You're nothing more than a kid yourself. you shouldn't have to take care of a kid that's not yours "
"Who else will? You can't and neither can Victoria. This way, the boy will still be fine and when things settle down you can have him back."
"Kaz? You still there or naw?" I watch as Haven pokes me. I can't stop the smile that plays on my face. Its funny how much her and Valerie are similar, she's just a lot less crazy. When she notices me watching her she sticks out her tongue. "Cant you hear? Niko's been calling you."
That's when I notice Nikholas sitting in her lap staring at me.
"Hey kid. What's up."
He titled his head at me before smiling. "Saw Momma. Said keep Havie safe."
So Vic knows I found her? "Did she say why?"
He nods. "Badmen here."
Badmen? What is he talking abo— "Oh fuck."
"What? Did something happen?"
"No and yes. I never said why me and Niko are hiding, did I?" I don't need her to answer because I know I didn't. "The new ruler of the Fade is the former King's brother. I use to serve the current King, however when he declared War on Janu, I began helping Soles escape to neutral territory. Thats treason and no one betrays Lord Irenaues."
"What happened to the former king?"
"Your sisters"
Haven's mouth fell open. And she stared. "What did they do?"
"Its a long story, but to get to the point, they exacted revenge. Now the former king is after them and left his brother in charge. Irenaues hates Soles and what better way to show it than by killing the Sole Queen's only child? He was looking for you even before I left. Now I'm a criminal and you're wanted, he'd kill two birds with one stone "
How could I not realize this sooner? There's a good chance he knows exactly where Haven is. Hell, he could have been watching her for sometime now.
I look back at Haven she's still stunned. Niko closes his eyes, probably talking to Val. I'll have to start training Haven sooner than later.
