"So you know Kaz, I've decided it's time to face everyone at school." I mention at breakfast. It's funny how normal life feels when it's anything but that at the moment.
He pauses, his hand freezing in the air. The piece of waffle he had on his fork falls back to the plate. "Are you sure? I mean they saw what you did they aren't going to just forget what happened."
I plop a honey covered waffle in my mouth. Its perfect. Fluffy but not too thick. The blueberries in it enhance the honey. Kaz is one hell of a cook.
"I know. But I can't just not go. I have to attend or the school will call Tyler, he's my legal guardian till Tabby's back in the US. I don't want him knowing all the shit I go through. He'll come up here ready to bust some heads. And God forbid if Tabby found out. She'd bust my head for not telling her"
Kaz nodded and put his fork down before taking a napkin and wiping Niko's syrupy face. "You don't know what they'll do to you. They could easily turn you in for some type of experiment."
"Epyramid? Whats that?" Niko cocks his head to the side like Kaz does sometimes.
"Experiment. Its a test but not one on paper. You perform it." Kaz says to him. I stuff another waffle in my mouth.
"You've heard of the Salem Witch trials, correct?"
I nod.
"That was a type of experiment done by the town. They wanted to figure out how to make a witch confess and those that do are human enough to be saved while those that don't have become completely taken over by the Witch's spirit and we're condemned to death. It was the largest and most know experiment against witches."
"Wow I didn't know that." I mutter and scoop up a waffle and feed Niko. "But still, I can't just not show up ever again."
"You can just make arrangement from here. Call the school and say your transferring or something."
"Id have to get something showing that. And then only Tyler or Tabby can tell them. I can't."
"Then tell your mother or brother what's going on so they can do it. Or if you'd like, I can show you how to manipulate memory. Manipulating the entire school's memory would be nearly impossible. But a handfull of people is no problem. Tell them you're leaving and then alter their mind so they think it's alright."
"You can teach me to do that?"
"Yeah. I can alter memories. I can teach you to do the same. As you are my Destined I can teach you any non essence related skill I have and vice versa."
"Whats a Destined?" I find myself mimicking Niko whenever he asks a question.
"A destined is simply someone whose Essence complement your own. You're wind and my fire go well together"
"Oh. So because of that you can teach me to manipulate memory?"
"Yes because even when you're far away from me, we are still connected. In theory, I can manipulate their memory through you. "
"Teach me."
He gave me a crooked smile. "You got it."
......
Lying on my bed, I heave a sigh. Lunch would have started by now. Despite what Kaz said running doesn't sit right with me. Even If I learn to alter memory, I don't want to just give up and leave. Jake would be mad if I did. He would've been on my side.
I frown at the ceiling. Why can't people just accept everyone for everyone. Why should it matter what someone is? It makes no sense.
I hear an engine shut off and bounce off the bed and to the window. A silver Chevy Cruz had pulled up into the driveway. Wait... That looks like Zeek's car. My suscpions are confirmed when he hopped out from the drivers seat. Fuck.
