Chapter 28

Katniss POV

(After school)

I walk into the Mellark bakery which I haven't been in for awhile now. The fresh smell of bread hits my nose as soon as I open the doors.

"Hey Katniss!" Peeta's older brother Rye says as I walk in

"Hey! Where's Peeta?"

He thinks for a minute "Honestly I have no clue, maybe in his room?" He pauses "I can go check for you?"

"Oh okay thanks!"

I sit down and wait for Rye to come back downstairs hopefully with Peeta.

Soon enough he comes back down.

"He wasn't in his room. My dad said he thought he was with you." He says a little worried

My eyes widen "I'll call him."

I reach quickly into my bag and frantically call Peeta.

(On the phone with Peeta)

"Peeta?" I say frantically

"Katniss are you okay?"

Phew he's okay.

"No the real question is are you okay?"

"I'm fine. What happened why did you call me and sound so scared?"

I sigh "because I'm at your house right now and all your family thought you were with me or in your room but you weren't."

"I'm sorry Katniss."

"Where are you?"

"I'm trying to start my car, I stopped at the store to grab a couple things for the bakery but now my car won't start."

"Do I need to come get you?"

"Uh maybe, let me try to start it again. Hold on."

I wait on the phone as I hear the noise of the car. I hear the car start then turn off again.

"Didn't work?"

"Nope. I'm going to call someone to get my car, then have my brother pick me up."

"I can come get you." I state quickly wondering why he was going to ask his brother when I'm right here

"No, it's okay I'll get my brother."

"Peeta is there something your not telling me?" I say growing a little sad and angry

"No I just don't want you to have to go through the the struggle of having to get me."

I roll my eyes "Really the struggle of having to get you?"

"Yeah."

"Im coming no matter what so what store are you at?"

"Idk." He says laughing

"Well if I'm not mistaken it's the one you always go to which is right over by the woods?"

"Maybe."

"I'm coming, I'll see you in a minute."

"Bye!"

"Bye."

I tell Peeta's family bye before walking out into my car. I get in the car and drive over to the store I'm for sure Peeta's at.

I pull in and see someone towing someone's car, which I'm guessing is Peeta's. I drive to the front of the store until I see Peeta. With a bruise on his face. I park quickly and run over to him.

I exam the pink and purple bruise located under his eye. I touch it gently and Peeta winces.

"What happened?"

"Nothing I just tripped and hit something."

"You expect me to believe that? Come on I'm taking you to my house so I can get some ice for that bruise and so you can tell me what happened." I say emphasizing the words 'you tell me'

I lead him to my car and drive him to my house.

(At Katniss's House)

"Peeta what happened?" I ask for the 100th time as Peeta sits on my bed next to me and applies the cold ice bag to his fresh bruise.

"Or at least who did it?" I ask again since he hasn't answered

"I already told you."

"You don't just run into something like that, I'd know I run into everything." I laugh but Peeta doesn't budge

After a long but of silence he speaks up "Gale did it."

"Oh Peeta." I say removing his hand from the ice pack, and setting it down. I then move my fingers across Peeta's bruise.

"Is this the only one?"

He then moves his pants up a little to show another bruise. I wrap my arms around his neck and give him a hug.

"Katniss how am I supposed to go to school with this bruise on my face. Won't people laugh." He says sadly

"No, no one will laugh and if they do I will personally go up to them and hurt them." I pause "is there anything I can do for you?"

"No,I'm just really tired." He says yawning

"Lay down." I say moving the covers down and seeking a pillow up for him on my bed.

"Are you sure it's okay with your mom?" He asks

"For you to lay on my bed?" I laugh "She won't care."

"Okay" he says before laying his head down and falling asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow, I slowly cover him up.

"Goodnight Peeta."
