Two days later, on Monday, Dan was waiting a bit impatiently at the door of his maths class. Kids were coming in and out, and he really wanted Phil to hurry up and get there soon, before Kyle came. Finally, Phil popped up, a head above the crowd. He waved to Dan, who was at the other end of the hall, and smiled. "Hey, love," Phil said to Dan, giving him a hug. "So... are you ready?"

To Dan, it was like preparing to jump off a diving board into the deep end in front of the whole school. Of course he was excited to finally be dating Phil, but he still needed to shake Kyle off him.

"Quick, he's coming, do something!" Dan hissed at Phil. Phil sprung into action and kissed Dan.

Unfortunately for Dan, his fairytale kiss with Phil was not all that he had made it cracked up to be. Dan was weak in the knees and Phil apparently had some sort of kale salad for lunch. Both their palms were sweaty, but it happened, and Dan liked it.

Kyle walked past quickly, headed straight for his seat and avoiding eye contact with the two lovebirds. "Hopefully now he'll leave you alone," Phil said, "and I won't have to fight anyone for your affection!" Dan laughed.

After maths, Dan has band. He was in jazz band, but his teacher wanted to work with symphonic band. Dan wasn't a part of that band, and normally he and the other jazz-only kids would skip class and go into town for a bite to eat or to just leave, but today it was raining, so Dan was condemned to the drumline room, where the colour guard and drumline kids were always hanging out. Sometimes you could find a percussion kid who was supposed to be in class but really didn't want to, and today, Dan found the upperclassmen who normally hung around in the room there.

Gabe was there. He was the pothead of the group, and was busy tapping away at his drum pad and trying to teach their other friend Peter how to do an easy trick. "No, you bounce the end of the drumstick down and catch it when it spins," Gabe tried to explain, but Peter was thoroughly confused. Sophia was there too, sitting with her boyfriend Thimis. Thimis' real name wasn't Thimis, it was actually Thomas, but ever since the halftime marching band performance back in '13 when Thimis' little brother shouted his nickname, it had been Thimis and not Thomas. "Hey Dan!" Thimis beamed. Sophia only smiled; she had trust issues in her relationship with Thimis and was certain that her boyfriend had a fancy for Dan. It was only one kiss last summer at a band camp sleepover!

Then, in the back of the room, perched on an empty drum box and fiddling with his bass guitar, was Thános. The mystery man, who was constantly out at a university party on the weekend and he, whom all the girls lusted over, and only he could never figure out why. Maybe it was the signature flannel and Vans, or the afro, or it might be the fact that he was obsessed with making sure everyone knew his name was an abbreviation of the Greek word Thánatos, meaning "Death." Whatever it was, it made Thános hardcore, unapologetic, and a real heartthrob.

It also made Thános an unattainable ex boyfriend, considering how the boy was apparently in a relationship with some girl he used to have a thing with, but their mutual friend Jesse told Dan that it was "complicated."

"You done staring? I mean, I know: I'm a lot to take in." A pluck of the string.

"Oh, hey Tháo," Dan said. "Sorry, just zoned out." "It's cool man, it's cool," Thános said, going back to thumping.

Dan watched as the slim, scar-strewn fingers flew on the fingerboard. Thános had a real talent.

"What's up?" he asked, and genuinely meant it. Dan shrugged. "Nothing really... boring classes all day and then homework all night. What a great way to spend my week!" he said, finishing his comment with a witty bite. Thános smiled, still staring at the guitar. "Yeah man I feel you. The exams are really bogging me down. I had one for maths yesterday, and one for language today. Then tomorrow I have one for chemistry. I'm stumped, dude!" Dan chuckled dryly, because nobody liked to talk about assessments.

Just then, a symphonic band kid popped into the doorway. "Hey guys, teacher wants all the pit kids out in the room for something apparently. Thanks." Everyone got up and left.

Except - you guessed it - Thános.

Thános took a long, hard look at Dan after everyone had left, then tilted his head. Dan looked over. "I know I'm a lot to take in," he mocked. Thános chuckled. "I know you are, I've seen it all before." Dan blushed.

"Hey, speaking of which," Thános said, standing up and walking over to Dan, who was leaning against a shelf of music, "do you ever think about it?"

"Think about what?" Dan asked, but he knew exactly what.

"It. Us. I heard from Liz you're dating Phil Lester. That true?"

Phil Lester. Dan's head was swimming. Why did that name sound so familiar? Oh, yes! That was Dan's fucking boyfriend.

"Oh, I dunno. I guess kinda, yeah."

Thános stepped closer. Their bodies were nearly touching and he could feel the hot breath of the taller boy on his lips.

"You don't know?" "Well, given the circumstances, this all happened so fast and I'm not really sure where I stand on it."

"What circumstances?" "Oh so Liz told you everything, except for the juicy parts? I'm only dating Phil because I lied to this guy Kyle who was hitting on me that Phil was my boyfriend so that Kyle would leave me alone."

"But does that mean you want to be with Dan?" Thános pushed. I don't know, does it?!

"I honestly... I don't know. Maybe I do, maybe I don't. I'm still taking it all in."

"Ok," Thános said after a long pause. "So then you won't mind if I do... this?" he asked, wrapping his hands around Dan's waist. Dan gulped. Like he said, all the girls wanted Thános, and some of the boys did too, and he wasn't stopped his ex boyfriend.

Dan wasn't saying no, and let Thános' bass plucking fingers find themselves tracing Dan's spine and landing on the dip in his back. Dan shuddered.

Thános leaned down, mouth inching ever closer to Dan's neck. Dan was ready to hold a moan in-

RING! That goddamn school bell. Saved by it once again.

"Think you can keep a secret?" Thános asked Dan, before setting him free. Dan nodded, though the pit in his stomach grew larger.

What has he just done?
