*KARA'S POV*

We've been hiding away from the school now for about five days and I'm not sure when Ace plans on taking me back.

I sat up in bed after a long day yesterday and immediately got up and poured myself a bowl of cereal. I was eating it at the little table in the corner of hotel and scrolling through my phone until I heard Ace get out of bed. He actually had a really nice build to him, but he was covered in scars from who knows what. He had grey eyes that were pretty gorgeous if they weren't stormy and the nicest smile when he showed it, even if he only showed it to me on rare occasions. He had floppy silver hair and a cute laugh, but I never heard it anymore.

I was lost in thought until I heard someone come up behind me and open a cabinet.

I turned around and Ace was getting out some cereal. I turned back around and continued to scroll through my phone until he sat down and I decided to say something to him.

"Good morning."

"Morning, how did you sleep?" he asked.

Now that I think about it, I hadn't had many nightmares lately. I hadn't slept with the picture, but I didn't sleep with it the night that I was screaming and Ace had to come and shut me up either.

"I slept good, no nightmares or anything. For some reason lately my nightmares have made a large decrease in showing up and I'm not really sure why, but I'm not complaining," I said shoving another spoonful of cereal into my mouth.

"I'm glad that you're sleeping well again, Kara."

I looked up at him and he gave me a lop-sided grin before eating his cereal again.

I turned my phone off, finished up my cereal, and put my bowl in the sink before sliding on my shoes and brushing my teeth.

"Where are you going?" Ace asked putting his dishes in the sink.

"Out. I'm sick of being cooped up in this little living space. I get that we are hiding and all, but I need some fresh air. Just lend my the scarlet fragment and I'll be fine."

"I'm not giving you that gun. It's dangerous so if you are going out, then I'm coming with you," he said putting on a shirt and tying his shoes.

I sighed and then walked out the door with Ace short behind me.

He stuck his gun in the holster on his shorts and locked the hotel door.

We still weren't very close despite all that's happened.

Even though I know that vampires exist now, even though he has protected me from multiple attacks and even though we have spent the last five days together we hardly talk. We talked the day we went on a walk, but that was it now its just greetings in the morning and farewells in the evening and a few questions in between.

I just want to know what he's hiding. I want to know why he goes to bed early or why sometimes when we are having a good talk he starts sweating and leaves the room claiming that he feels sick. It all just seems really odd to me.

I want to know why my mind in my nightmares seems to perceive him as some sort of monster when I know in my heart that he is anything but that.

What is he hiding from me?

I walked down the street to clear my head of my thoughts with Ace trailing behind me.

What am I to him? A child? A victim? When he's like this he's more a body guard than a friend.

"Do you think I'm helpless?" I asked as I stepped into an ice cream parlor.

It was ten in the morning, but I wanted some ice cream.
