*KARA'S POV*

"Cora, why did he leave me in charge of this?" I muttered while glancing back and forth between the laptop files and the digital translator.

"Well, for starters, I know he doesn't want you out there swinging at vampires and shooting a gun that you don't know how to use. That may be a contributing factor," she said sarcastically, although sincerity was evident in her tone.

"How are you and Ace?" She asked.

"We're good I guess. He's just really overwhelmed with all these war antics and the stress is eating him alive."

"I know. You're one of the only things keeping him afloat though."

"I know."

We sat in silence for a few minutes before an explosion sounded throughout the woods which began to shake the truck and it knocked me off of my feet, sending my body into the back doors of the truck as my head made contact with a metal rod. I immediately felt the blood begin to spill down my neck which colored my shirt a fluorescent scarlet shade.

"Great," I muttered covering the spot on my head. I pulled my hand away to discover that the sticky red substance was coating my palm.

"Kara! Cover it!" Cora yelled before tossing some gauze in my direction.

"What's wrong?" I inquired.

"The woods are on fire," she paused, "and I can sense them coming. They smell the blood," she said before whispering, "So do I."

I looked in the mirror so that I could properly and thickly wrap the gauze around my head.

"Grab a gun!" she yelled as she slammed on the gas and began to drive along the outskirts of the woods.

I was again slammed into the door, however this time I collided with the rod face first and soon afterwards, my mouth was filled with the metallic taste of my own blood.

I spit the blood onto the floor of the truck and grabbed a scarlet fragment from the wall.

"Are you trying to kill me?" I asked before proceeding to take the gun off safety."

"No princess. That's what I'm trying not to do, but if you use that thing you'll die yourself. You don't even know how to operate it," Cora yelled as vampires began to spill out of the flaming woods.

"I've shot a pistol before. How different is it really?"

"This is a gun specifically designed to murder vampires. It's not a toy."

"Desperate times call for desperate measures!" I yelled while tying a cord around my waist and then tying the loose ends to both sides of the truck.

"Kara, what are you-"

I interrupted her by flinging open the doors to the back of the truck.

"Are you crazy!?" Cora yelled while catching the laptop, translator, and excess files out of the floor.

"Yes!" I yelled as the vampires began to chase after the truck following in suit closely behind.

I lifted the gun in the direction of one of the vampires' heads and fired, sending him into an obliteration of dust.

"Nice shot. Where did you learn to shoot like that?"

I dug deep into my memories and replayed the day in my head.

"So like this?"

"No, Kara. Your thumb is on the slide. You'll get injured that way."
