"(M/N) where are we going?"

I smiled as I held my boyfriends hand. Pulling him down busy streets of New York towards our destination. An animal shelter.

I had heard from Bucky's phycologist that possibly getting a pet would ease his nerves maybe ease him into a more "normal mindset". And to be honest any excuse I had to get a pet I would take. And being it was our two year anniversary I thought it would be a good gift.

We came upon the shelter and I looked back at my confused boyfriend.

"What are we doing here?" He asked. I smiled and held his other hand.

"I thought that maybe we could get a dog. Or cat... Whatever you want! I thought maybe it'd be nice!" I smiled. Bucky was confused but nodded none the less allowing me to pull him into the shelter.

I walked up to the front desk and told them we wanted to see the animals. And adopt of course. The woman behind the desk took us to the back where dogs and cats alike were sitting in medium cages, accommodating the larger animals with larger cages.

I looked over to Bucky who looked over the cages warily. He looked at me and shrugged.

"Which one do you want?" He asked. I shook my head.

"It's all up to you. I want you to choose them." I said. Bucky looked down, then back to the cages scanning the cats and dogs. I jumped when one cat clawed at Bucky's face. He jumped but laughed when he saw I had done the same.

After about half an hour I was growing tired of watching him meander around the cages. The woman from the front desk pulled me out. Something about papers... So I left Bucky in the room to decide.

I had just finished signing a paper when the door of the room opened. I saw Bucky holding a short rope leash with a smile. I smiled as well as I saw a large long haired golden retriever- limp from the room?

I walked over to Bucky crouching down in front of the dog. It was older, but not yet a grandpa like Buck. It's fur was long and wavy looking like liquid gold spilling off its back. And only when I looked down at its paws did I notice one missing.

It's front left leg was gone up to the shoulder. I looked up at Bucky surprised at the choice. But his smile only assured me this was the one he wanted.

"His name is Sarge," Bucky said, smiling down at the doc. Who seemed to smile back.

"He's been here for a while. His cage was all the way in the back. They told me he was a military dog two years ago. Lost his leg on one of his missions." Bucky said. I smiled sadly at the dog as I pet Sarge's head. The dog seemed happy with the attention, and was very excited. Even if he was on a leash.

"Do you like him?" I asked. Bucky smiled and nodded.

"Well let's get him then." I smiled. I've never seen Bucky so happy.

I filled out the forms and soon enough we were on our way home with our new dog Sarge gimping happily at our sides.
