I gasp, hands shaking as I read the card. In fancy calligraphy there were the words: You are cordially invited to the wedding of Lucas Friar and Riley Matthews. Tears blur my vision. She was doing it, she really was.
"Don't you think you should at least tell her how you feel before she follows through with this?" Farkle's voice rings out. I look behind my shoulder to find the genius standing there, concern written on his face.
"I can't do that Farkle. She's happy with Lucas." My voice cracks at the name of her lover. The person who stole her away from me. From now on, it's gonna be Riley and Lucas, not Riley and Maya.
"But you can't do this to yourself either!" Farkle exclaims, frustrated. "Look at you, you're miserable! You've been miserable for the past ten years! Maya, you can't hide your feelings anymore." Farkle shakes his head. "The truth always comes out." He quotes Cory Matthews, Riley's dad.
My whole body is shaking at this point. I grip the countertop tightly, knuckles turning white, trying to stop myself from falling. Ever since that fateful day in the subway, all Riley would gush about is Lucas. How kind he is, how handsome he is, how charming he is, how perfect he is! Everything that I was not. I was just her broken, needy best friend. That's all I ever was to her.
All my life, I was waiting for Riley to realize that sometimes she didn't need a knight in shining armor. That sometimes, the special someone is closer than you think. But no, Riley continued to fantasize about living her life with Lucas and now it was coming true.
Farkle has a deep frown etched on his face. "Come here." He holds his arms out, realizing I was about to break down. I fly into his arms and the tears come flowing out. I sob and sob and sob while Farkle just holds me. I cry about everything. About my dad leaving my mother and I, about falling for my best friend, about losing her to a cowboy from Texas.
Night was falling, and Farkle eventually had to leave. "Just think about what I said." Farkle says before leaving me in my own sorrows.
I couldn't just stop her wedding. She's been dreaming about having a perfect wedding with a perfect boy all her life. And now she was going to have it. Riley was right. I did step back, but not for the reason she thought I did. I snort when thinking about the love triangle. It was all a cover-up for my true feelings. I cry myself to sleep that night and every night after that, knowing that the day has come where I lose my best friend. My love. My everything.

"This wedding is going to be amazing Maya! And you'll be my maid of honor, right?" Riley asks me, her eyes shining.
"Of course." I say, giving another fake smile and nod. That's all I ever did nowadays, pretend. "Peaches, what's wrong?" Riley asks, seeing right through me.
"Nothing. I'm fine." I mumble, turning away from her. Farkle's words flash in my mind once again. The truth always comes out.

The night before the wedding, I'm sitting at a bar, drowning in my own sorrows. "Another round." I say to the bartender.
"Rough day?" He asks.
"More like rough decade." I say, downing another shot. The burning sensation slithers down my throat and another piece of me dies.
"What's up, if I may ask." The bartender says.
"Oh nothing big. You know, just that I fell in love with my best friend and now she's getting married to another guy tomorrow." I say warily, grabbing another shot glass.
"Ouch." The bartender says with sympathy. "Maybe you should tell her how you feel."
Why is everyone saying that!? "I can't do that! She's happy with him and I'm not going to stop her from being happy!" I exclaim, groaning. I slam my head on the counter, wanting all of this to be a bad nightmare. I wanted to wake up in Riley's arms as little kids again. Just me and her against the world.
