New Girl

It wasn't easy to be the new girl. Frankly, I've always been the new girl. My parents, Cory and Topanga, always had busy jobs that required us to move around a lot. I've been to nearly every state in the U.S. and I have the souvenirs to prove it.

Today we are moving into an apartment in New York. My parents had promised Auggie (my brother) and I that we would stay here for the next couple of years, meaning I get to finish high school here.

"Okay, I think that's the last of it." My dad says, setting a box down. "Here's to a new home!"

"New and temporary." I mutter, not believing that we would actually be staying here for more than a year. They said that I was going to finish high school at Boston with my friends Maddie and London, but yet here I am now, in a whole other state.

"Riley, I know you're still mad about leaving your friends behind but I promise that you're going to love it here." My mom says.

"What about me!?" Auggie protests. "I had to leave Zack and Cody behind!" He pouts, making my parents smile at his adorableness.

"I'm sorry bubba, but we had no other choice." My dad says, ruffling Auggie's hair.

"Riley, you should start unpacking. You still have school tomorrow." My mom says.

I groan but nonetheless begin opening a box, taking some of my stuff out. About ten minutes later, there's a knock on the door. My mom opens it to reveal a kind looking boy with a smile on his face and a container in his hand, who looks about my age.

"Hi." The boy says with a slight country drawl in his voice. "I'm Lucas Friar and I live next door. My momma sent me over to welcome you to New York and bring you some homemade cookies." Yep, that definitely was a country accent.

"Well thank you, Lucas." My mom says.

"COOKIES!" Auggie exclaims, running over to the door and nearly knocking me over in the process.

Lucas looks slightly amused at the sight of Auggie and hands the container over to him. "Here you go."

"Thanks!" Auggie smiles, ripping open the container and shoving a cookie into his mouth.

My mom laughs. "This is Auggie." She introduces. "And my daughter Riley is over there." She points to me.

Lucas shifts his gaze to mine. He waves to me. "Just out of curiosity, what school are you doing to?"

"Um, Abigail Adams High, I think." I answer.

Lucas's grin spreads even wider on his face. "That's where I go. If you would like, I can show you around tomorrow."

"Yeah, that would be great, thanks!" I say.

"I'll see you tomorrow, then." And with one last wave, Lucas exits our apartment, making me feel slightly more welcomed in the Big Apple.

The next day, my dad dropped me off at the front doors of the school. Almost as soon as I entered, all eyes turned to me and whispers broke out. It didn't faze me though, I was used to all of it. Ignoring all the eyes on me, I walk around, trying to find my next class, or at least Lucas.

"Riley, over here!"

I turn around to see Lucas with two guys, most likely his friends. I smile and make my way over to them.

"Guys, this is Riley." Lucas introduces me. "Riley, this is Zay and Farkle." He points to each of them in turn. "She just moved into the apartment next to mine."

"Hi." I say awkwardly. I was never that good at making friends due to my somewhat awkward and clumsy self. It was a miracle in itself that I had even managed to befriend Lucas.
