"I apologized!" Riley shouts for what seems to be the millionth time now.
"I don't care!" I yell back at her.
"How many times are you going to make me say sorry, Maya!?" Riley exclaims.
"Are you actually sorry?" I ask.
"No!"
Riley scowls and storms over to her bed.
"Fine, you don't want to sit by me." I say, trying to mask my hurt.
"I will not stink up the bay window with this ridiculous argument!" Riley shouts.
I scowl at her words. The rest of the night is spent with the two of us continuing to argue. Eventually, I've had enough of it and climb out of her window, storming into the night, the argument to be continued the next day.
"You stood up for Lucas and not me!" I shout.
"I didn't stick up for him." Riley states, crossing her arms.
"You didn't disagree with him!"
"Well if you really think about it, he wasn't wrong." Riley says.
"Who cares!?"
"Oh, so right and wrong don't matter now?" Riley mocks.
"The only thing that matters is you and me." I say, motioning to our rings. "When have I not stood up for you?"
"When I'm WRONG!" Riley emphasizes.
"You're always wrong!" I shoot back. Riley gives a little gasp but I ignore it. "Or you're always right, who cares, I don't listen. I just stick up for you automatically!"
"That's it, I'm not going to be the cause of this." Lucas says, trying to break up our mini fight.
"Too late, Huckleberry." I scoff.
"You know why it happened, Maya?" Lucas asks. "You call me all these names. I finally struck back once."
"This has nothing to do with you who I will deal with later!" I snarl at him, causing Lucas, Farkle, and Zay all to back up in fear. "This happened because she stuck up for you."
"I didn't stick up for him!" Riley scowls.
"You didn't disagree with him!"
"How couldn't she disagree with him, she's right." Farkle says, not getting it. "You're next!" I shout at him.
"I wanna be first." Farkle leans forward, a creepy smile on his face, making Riley and I back up this time.
"He is right you know." Zay says.
"Why does that mean so much to everybody!? When being right is more important than being friends!? Then that's the end of being friends." I say, walking into Matthews's classroom, not bothering to see everybody's reaction to my words. I sit down at my desk, ignoring everyone else as they walk in and take their usual seats.
I felt Riley's piercing stare on me and I clench my jaw, trying not to snap at her again. Finally, the dam bursts. "Why didn't you disagree with him, Riley?" I say, trying my best not to shout. I didn't want to do this, I didn't want to continue to quarrel with her but she left me no choice. She doesn't understand the severity of the situation here.
"How can I disagree with what he said if what he said was true!?" Riley starts to raise her voice again.
"In life, sometimes you just need someone to be there for you no matter what!" I yell, turning to face her.
"But what he said was true!" Riley exclaims once again, leaning in. For a split-second, I'm caught off guard by just how close our faces were before my anger was back.
