"Um, I don't think I wanna do this anymore." Riley says nervously, glancing out the car window. I had asked her if she would help me with my driving, since she already got her license.
"Come on Riles, I'm not that bad a driver." I say, rolling my eyes.
"Yes you are!" She exclaims. "Peaches, you've failed your driver's test like ten times now! And the last time you failed it was because you drove the car into a grocery store!"
"Which gives me more reasons on why I need to practice before my next test!" I reason.
"Okay fine." Riley gives in. She frantically buckles her seat belt and shuts her eyes closed. She was such a drama queen but she was my queen.
"I'm starting the car." I announce to her, narrating my every action. "I'm switching the gear shift from parking to reverse."
Riley's eyes fly open and she gives me a look of confusion. "Don't you mean the PRNDL?" She asks.
It was my turn to be confused. "The what?" I ask.
"The PRNDL!" Riley says as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Are you referring to the shift lever that says P-R-N-D-L?" I raise an eyebrow. Riley nods her head. "I'm not a child, Maya. I know how to spell PRNDL."
If my hands weren't currently on the wheel, steering the car, I would've face palmed. Oh Riley...
I debate whether or not I should even try to explain this to her. How is it that she has her license and I only have a permit? Eventually, I wanna see where this goes so I continue. "It's not something that you spell. It's a gear shift. The letters stand for parking, reverse, neutral, drive, and low."
"Oh Maya. Maya, Maya, Maya." Riley says, shaking her head. "It's a PRNDL."
I sigh. "You a lotta work." I repeat my 7th grade self. I make a successful left turn.
"Yay Peaches!" Riley says, cheering at my success. I couldn't help but smile at her. She was just too adorable.
"Let's listen to the radio." Riley says, now that she was confident enough in my driving ability. "Would you like AMMMM or FMMMM?" She asks, drawling out the m in each word.
"Oh boy." I say, shaking my head. I turn my head to look at her. "Eyes on the road, Maya!" Riley shouts.
"Relax Riley! Nothing bad is gonna happen." I reassure her, shifting my gaze back to the road. "Little boy!" Riley shouts, pointing at the boy in the open road.
"Ah!" Riley screams and closes her eyes, waiting for the impact. I swerve the car, narrowly missing the little guy. "Riley, you can open your eyes now." I say, heart still racing from the almost accident.
"Are you sure?" She mumbles, eyes sealed shut.
"Yes, I'm sure."
Riley slowly opens her eyes, surprised to find us still alive and driving. "That was close." She sighs in relief.
"You have no idea." I snort. She wasn't even looking, her eyes were closed!
"Mama Duck and her little chicks!" Riley shouts again, pointing at the road in front of us. I swerve the car once again, trying to avoid running over the adorable little chicks. Not as adorable as Riley though.
Unfortunately, the car ended up on the sidewalk. "Maya, this isn't the road!" Riley shouts, fear in her eyes as I drive through people's trash cans, knocking them over. There was a group of teenagers carrying boxes. Their eyes widen at the car that was driving on the sidewalk.
"Move it or lose it!" I shout. The teens all jump out of the way, dropping the boxes. "Sorry!" Riley calls out the window as we drive away.
"Maya, get back on the road!" She shouts at me frantically, panic in her eyes.
"I'm trying!" I shout back at her, turning the steering wheel. I ended up knocking over someone's mailbox and crashing into a fire hydrant, effectively stopping the car. The hydrant bursts, showering water everywhere.
Riley's mouth was hanging open and she was frozen in place, just watching the water rise up. I sigh in relief, glad that the disaster was over.
"That was close. Right honey?" I don't get a reply. "Honey?" I ask again, looking over at Riley to see she was still frozen in place, giving no indication of hearing me. "Riles?" I try again, shaking her. No response.
"Great, I broke you." I sigh. "Come on Riley!" I violently shake her. Still no response. There was a quack though. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. Was that coming from Riley? I look out the window to find the chicks from earlier, strolling down the street, making their way past the car.
"Oh hey, Riley look! It's the chicks!" I try again, desperate to get her to say something. Riley still doesn't reply, something that scares me. If fluffy little baby chicks don't get her to snap out of it, then what will?
My mind suddenly gets an idea. I give a sly smile before leaning in and kissing her, effectively bringing her back to reality.
"Maya!?" She shouts, sounding even more shocked than before.
"What?" I ask innocently, giving her puppy dog eyes. Riley melts upon seeing them. "Nothing. As much as I love you, I'm never getting in another car with you every again."
